Agreed. Given most of the early PRC aerospace/heavy industry started in the northeast provinces, there is definitely entrenched inertia and corruption.

...but I am a bit confused by your other remarks above. The AL-31 and RD-33 are directly comparable with their US stablemates (from roughly the 1980's when designed) in almost all parameters. Using that F-16 forum as a source of info is just...odd. It is notoriously xenophobic and racist against anything not from the US...and whilst they are generally contemptuous of others aircraft (like Rafale and Gripen) ...it in particular reaches truly awful toxic levels against anything Chinese or Russian.
It's not a site worth wasting time on, or where anything useful or sane can be gleaned.

Oh I agree on your overall judgement of most members on f-16 forums and their attitudes towards non western people and equipment but I should probably have made it clear that I was referring to a link to an article posted by a member there. In any case, those russian engines were direct competitors to the US equivalents in terms of thrust but not efficiency or reliability.

Judging by the trailer, the movie will be a mix of cool, real world practical shots of actual chinese military hardware sitting on tarmac or taking off, and a bunch of of subpar CG imagery of the same doing maneuvers and combat.
