That's exactly the reason !!

I nearly get a heart-attack with each and every post since I hope for a decent clear image of '2021' !

I remember reading somewhere a long time ago with an article comparing the fuel efficiency of Russian and american engines. Heat management was also compared (think it was f-16 forums). The Russian engines were nowhere near the performance of even legacy P&W or GEs. We also all know about the maintenance requirements and MTBF rates.

The overhaul/maintenance regime of Soviet legacy engines followed a different PHILOSOPHY....yes..

...but I am a bit confused by your other remarks above. The AL-31 and RD-33 are directly comparable with their US stablemates (from roughly the 1980's when designed) in almost all parameters. Using that F-16 forum as a source of info is just...odd. It is notoriously xenophobic and racist against anything not from the US...and whilst they are generally contemptuous of others aircraft (like Rafale and Gripen) ...it in particular reaches truly awful toxic levels against anything Chinese or Russian.
It's not a site worth wasting time on, or where anything useful or sane can be gleaned.

Oops...sorry...only got to the end of the thread now. Sorry Deino..please do as you see fit to that post above...even though it is meant in context to the J-20.
The J-20 is using engines (interim for the time being) directly comparable to engines still used in hundreds of front line fighters used in the benchmark airforce (USA) is what I meant.
Nothing wrong with that until such time as the indigenous developments come on stream.

SAC is the veritable punching bag of the Chinese military bbs community. I sometimes wonder if the SAC hate has gone overboard.

Some of it is definitely blind hate. But I would say a good deal of it is rather frustration, frustration that SAC couldn't come up with state-of-art designs that can compete with latest developments from the US. Military fans' appetite for new exciting technological breakthrough/designs is always insatiable. Fans want something new from SAC after so many versions of flanker. J-31 is just not good enough when comparing to J-20. Still if SAC could somehow make J-31 an export success, haters might change their minds.

I think there's also latent regionalism built along stereotypes of the Northeast's attitudes toward work culture and corruption.
