Rumor basically started with Chinese Flankers (J-11 and J-15 especially) . Prototype variants had grey wheels, as they become operational they switched to green ones . J-20 is logical successor to Flanker family, so it is possible that same pattern will emerge . Of course, this is all highly speculative , but we are grasping at straws here do to the lack of real information ;)

I think the J-15 example is the only example where a prototype used grey wheels and where the mass production in service model used green wheels.

Every other aircraft does not follow that trend.

It was an interesting idea to suggest, but I simply do not see the evidence to suggest that this is the case, because if it were true then all the prototypes of all Chinese combat aircraft should have grey wheels and all the in service aircraft should have green wheels.

Somewhat OT, but do the J15 use the same wheels as regular J11s, or special carrier ones?
You remember that the US fighter-bomber F-4 needed larger wheels when redeveloped for use by the Air Force? I think the size is the same but the design vertical touch down velocity is twice that for land bases so I expect they will have had to be redesigned just as the whole of the landing gear.

J15 very likely use much higher pressure, but possibly smaller, tires because on deck steel, there is no need to increase contact match, and higher pressure would better absorb a fast and steep landing. It's not clear if the wheel hubs would be different, I suspect the hubs would be different too to accommodate different brakes. But the gear struts are almost certainly different and heavily reinforced.
