Pretty sure both are AL-31s.

is difficult to opine, since i do not what engines are, they seem Al-31s, if that is the case, J-20 has a very degraded performance since it is even heavier than Su-27, but that is just a pure supposition since i do not know it it has Al-31.
Plus i do not know when they fit more powerful engines than Al-31s.

Who knows?

Agreed and I think - even my own early assesment - all ideas about a WS-10G version were false. These are two AL-31FN-versions and IMO one with the zig-zag-painting on and one without.

PLEASE be careful. We all know that the J-20 is NOT larger or longer than the Flanker, as such to assume it is heavier is pure speculation.
I agree with You that is surely limited in its performance until the final WS-15 arrive.

Besides that I learned from a Russian source, that CAC was indeed able - similar to the J-10 deal - to purchase a J-20 tailored version of the AL-31FN incorporating features from the M1 or even M2. Sadly no additional information, but if this is correct, a version with 132-145 kN could be indeed a suitable interm engine.
