we may not see a real J-20 prototype before the ws-15

the design of the J-20 is based on the ws-15, and the ws-15 and its current substitue the AL31 are quite different, with different thrust and size, they are not interchangeble. with thrust 30% lower than the design, many test flights cannot be carried by the #2011.

While I understand your disappointment Les, Dr. Song designed the J-20 for reality, not "pie in the sky" and he made aerodynamic acomodations to bring the J-20 on-stage with-out those upgrades, it will do fine, on another note the USAF/Navy will be pulling up sixth gen designs to move the ball down the court. brat

Global Times confirmed that China obtained 5 key technologies from F-35.

I read the original global times article, I believe the original photo set was an example of saying J-20 also had the capabilities which F-35 had.

More importantly, one can tell that the photo set was made by someone not familiar matters.

Wow...a lot of lost in translation here, and also some unreliable reporting from Chinese public commentators. The original Global Times article was about the J-20 now having 6 key technologies that the F-35 also has, made no mention of how the technology was developed or acquired, and was essentially a complete rip from a thread at a Chinese military forum. The word "obtained" is either a fabrication or a VERY poor translation by someone who has a weak grasp of the language. Mr. Du's comments about the shortened engine nozzles on 2011 reflects the lack of care military commentators in China place in vetting rumours and informal sources because if you carefully examine the pictures you'd note that not only have the nozzles not been shortened, but they seem to be the exact same nozzles on 2001/2002. The only way he could have thought the nozzles were shortened were if he neglected to follow up on the analysis that the nozzles were shortened from earlier pics that did not give us a good view of the tail end of the plane. I also suspect that his comments about breakthroughs in engine technologies refers to another thread in a military forum that reported some rather incredulous breakthroughs, which, in my estimation, is probably fictional, because the 2011 is probably using AL-31s. It's either possible that whoever's doing the reporting misses that Mr. Du's comments on the engines were not directly related to the J-20, or that Mr. Du himself mashed up two bits of information together without heeding their accuracy.
