I think here is my first surprise as mentioned in the "Aviation industry" tread ... if it is real then this would be a J-10C !

Even more since 101x = J-10A pre-serials, 102x = J-10S prototypes, 103x = J-10B prototypes, and now maybe 105x = J-10C prototype ... all what is missing is a 104x = maybe the J-10BS prototypes !!

Any idea what the extra protrusion is for?

To admit ... no !

I'm even a bit disappointed - not about the fact that we have a new prototype - but since IMO or better to say in my hopes, this so far secret J-10C was always more a F-16 Block-50/60-like multirole fighter maybe featuring an enlarged spine for additional avionics, targeting pods (these may come later) ... so it seems as if the step from "B" to "C" is at least externally only a minor one.

That new prototype (if the photo is real) still uses a Russian Al-31 engine.

so the question for me now is what No. 201 represents since 1051 looks like the J-10C prototype. It's possible 201 is just another J-10B but with AESA radar that they've been flying to test out its capabilities. Maybe there are some other changes to electronics from the first batch.

Huitong assumes that it is the same aircraft simply renumbered !

I very much doubt that. If you look at the photo that Hyperwrap posted on the previous page you will see that the 1051 has an extra antenna on its back and a new sensor on its tail.

Now about the WS-10B. What is the problem with that engine ? Is it reliability, durability, software or production rate that prevents that engine from being installed on the J-10's.
