Do TV studios, because they are a slowly dying business, still pay for TV shows to be made.

The circumstances are different from show to show. Some networks own the show outright. Some shows are produced by a studio or production company and if a network likes the show they'll pay for a number of episodes to be made. If enough people watch, the network will order more episodes.

I don't think TV shows are a dying business. They say right now it's in it's golden era where it's not relegated to free network TV which opens the content more to which why you see movie stars doing TV now while movies are losing their luster.

Oh... I meant TV channels.Over here because of all the different viewing
options available they all have declining income streams through falling advertising revenue.,thus no money to by all the foreign TV shows like they use to. To make things worse they no longer show premier sports after being outbid by Sky, and shortly, Amazon are about to enter the market.

In recent times my friend downloads foreign tV programs and gives me a copy. Otherwise there is no way I will get to see programs like The Strain, Expanse, Survival.
I dont understand why the makers get so shitty about this after all, in the old days with VCR recorders we could watch and swap without much outcry.

That's the problem with subscription services. Too many are coming fighting for a slice in the same size pie. What usually happens is natural selection. They're going to merge because people aren't to be paying $6- $13 per service or they're going to die off from lack of subscribers.

Free network TV makes money from commercial advertisement. Subscription TV gets their money on how many subscribers they get. The way they choose and pick TV shows is basically the same. Despite the rise of subscription services, free network TV still gets more viewers. That's why CBS is going to air the pilot of Star Trek Discovery on their network to get a lot people to watch and hopefully sign on to their service.

I don't think free network TV is dead. They still can make money on a good show. The problem with free network TV is they're regulated by the FCC. There are restrictions on content that cable and subscription services don't have to think about. But then there those that don't want racy mature content on their TV shows. It's sort of like country music. You think from the way people talk about country music that it's not that popular but it makes more money than any other genre.
