I wonder how it compares to have the pistol mags on the vest. Seems like it could be heavy and clunky.
Based on that magazine pouches' location, it looks like the weight is all on one leg. They should at least put the mags on the other leg since: 1. reloading will be awkward 2. The right leg won't be exhausted. As for the vest, putting pistol mags on a vest takes up valuable space for the rifle's magazines, radios, and etc. I personally think they should be issued battle belts since they can carry extra stuff like dump pouches, pistol, pistol magazines, and etc.

They are probably just testing things out, but it’s a stupid place to store spares because you load them with your offhand and now the spares are on the wrong side to easily and quickly reach.

However, maybe we should take a step back in just automatically assuming those pouches are for spare mags. That would be a bad place to store spare mags, but it would be a nice place to store a moderator/suppressor and weapon mountable flashlight for the pistol.

They're testing 2 double mag pouches loadout instead of the current 4 single mag pouches back in 2018, I wonder why they went with the latter.

well we can explore the potential downside to having more mags:
1 heavier or unequal weight distribution
2 obstructing prone position and movements
3 not left-handed friendly seeing as they are all on one side, unless it is modularized.

it could also just be that soldiers are already used to the current form, no point in making changes to that.

Based at the location of the smart tablet the pouches clearly located in the center of the vest like this

Us soldiers also wear bulky double mag pouches
