Before the hiatus of the Russia/India Su-57 affair, Russia had quoted 250 million per copy of the Su-57 to India, I think that was the straw that broke the camels back. This was after FGFA had been rolled way, way back.

It was a number of years ago, and economies were much healthier, lol.

anyway, I would be beyond shocked it the Su-57 comes in much below 80 million, even if the electronics are down graded??

I am only advancing the idea that a realistic path for Russia to drive down the cost on the SU-57 is to downgrade the electronics. How far down that would drive cost is not something I would even be able to speculate

That'll be alright with russians. They always have a way to recoup their cost.
If india buys these at $100 mil a pop, the russians will make sure they're paid through the nose on servicing cost, upgrades etc. So much so, indians would wish they could've paid $250 mil and be able to service these jets themselves.

" The Northern Army Commander Lt. General Ranbir Singh has postponed his visit to China, to monitor the situation arising in Jammu and Kashmir and the borders, ahead of the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India next month.
Highly placed sources said Lt. General Singh’s presence at home was required as a precaution following China’s objections to India’s decision to scrap special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370.
China had raised the red flag especially on India’s decision to accord Union Territory status to Ladakh, which shares a disputed border with China, citing “sovereignty” concerns."

's September 9 visit for talks on the boundary issue with national security adviser Ajit Doval. While there is no official confirmation yet, sources said it was the Indian government that sought a change in dates.
There is official silence on the reason for the postponement of the talks."

So 2 snubs by India to China in 2 days. Guess supporting fundamentalist regimes has its costs. I foresee a huawei 5G based news in the near future. India is using Huawei to beat the prices down from other suppliers, no chance of Huawei getting any substantial footprint in India.

What consequences? Wang Yi got his vaccination shots for nothing? LOL These talks are at least as much for India as they are for China. You are dealing with a national crisis so your generals are needed and that's fine. In the meantime, China will continue to support whomever we see fit.

As for Huawei, that is India's choice completely but as we all know, there are no true competitors to Huawei. India's procurement is notoriously inefficient as we saw with the 126 Fighter tender so I don't think too many people had much riding on this anyway. If India insists that it wants to be behind even its own smaller neighbors like Nepal (which has asked Huawei to build its next national telecom system), that's your choice. You like to be behind, it's nobody's job to push you into the future.

Its a bit snide to say Huawei is the only way forward. Slowly but surely, there are other competitors like Erricson catching up to it. And if it means that a country can maintain its communicative medium's authority in all ways to itself, then losing a few years is worth it. Specially for large countries like India which may in about 2 decades actually become a major competitor to China's tech itself. Over reliance on just China tech for what will become absolutely critical infrastructure of internet will not really go down well with any strategic planners of India.

OK, Huawei is not the only way forward because India's so backwards that most telecom companies can move India forward from where it is, but Huawei is the only way to not get left behind. Not Ericsson nor any other company is catching up to Huawei; they are improving themselves slowly but surely, but Huawei is improving faster. In China's eyes, the US is the only worthy rival; don't wanna hurt anybody's feelings but India is not a competitor to China. So if India wants to get the best price, the best product, and the most modern telecoms capability, Huawei is the only solution. BUT if they want to fool themselves into thinking that they are such an important antagonist to China that Huawei would jeopardize its business to sabotage them, they are free to be deluded all the same. I can boycott the best conglomerate supermarket in town with price and quality heads-and-shoulders above its rivals because I think the CEO's so jealous of my little cookie shop that he wants to poison me but when I do that out of paranoia, I'm the one who's going to suffer for it.

Look at what happened to Europe when it was 2 years slower on 4G than the USA.

That delay contributed to the dominance of US companies in Europe - in the realm of mobile applications.

Eg. Facebook messenger, whatsapp, instagram, Google, etc

I understand your views, but India kind of is in a dilemma since its neither a pure competitor (europe vs us) nor a pure customer ( supermarket example).
On one hand it'll require efficient dispersal of funds to lay out next gen civilian comms, it'll also just as importantly need to shield itself from foreign influence.
Europe (west) can afford to be actively affected by US tech on daily basis since they stand on the same side in any conflict and don't face any inherent threat due to vulnerabilites like these. The same cannot be said for India and China. India is far ways different than Russia when it comes to relationship with China.

What's not true? Your entire article shows exactly why India's growing data usage requirements needs Huawei. Just as I said, Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, anybody with any kind of lesser 5G capability can provide India with an upgrade, but only Huawei can bring India telecom to the forefront of the 5G standard. The only way that would be not true is if you interpreted my statement in an extremely literal way, thinking that any small company without even a prayer of walking into the 5G world can do it.

As things stand between China and India, for the Chinese government to have to use Huawei to hurt India as one of its customers is a rather desperate move. China has so many legitimate ways to deal with India's military incompetence that damaging Huawei's global image wouldn't even be considered. But that's my take. Indians can imagine any situation they like with their puffed up sense of self-importance.
