B1tch, China already has WS-10, WS-15, WS-13, WS-21, WS-19, WS-18, WS-20, WJ-6, WJ-10, WZ-6, WZ-8, WZ-9, WZ-10, WZ-16, etc. in use/in service, alongside plenty of other engine projects in the works.

In the meantime, what's your half-a$$ed Kaveri doing?

Btw, this in principle may explain things.

If actual AMCA is effectively a geometry-only jet (KF-21 analog) with bay provision, it can be developed reasonably quickly without demonstrators, and can at least somewhat seriously expect a less experienced entity (probably hiring from HAL talent pool) to manage it.

It'll also explain why IN doesn't mind the lack of bay/VLO on TEDBF - contrary to current understanding, the difference just won't be that substantial. In which case, a jet designed for naval combat benefits very strongly from larger, longer-range munitions.

That's 34 billion USD at current exchange rate. Half of the entire Indian defence budget!

Indian govt is claiming the plane will be "50% indigenous". France is also to open a manufacturing site outside of the country for the first time to speed up production. The big fight is over source code access and IP. Essentially, Indians want to integrate non-French weapons without asking for permission. Not clear how this impasse will be solved but I don't think it will be a major stumbling bloc.

The Indian navy has also separately expressed interest in increasing their Rafale order. It doesn't seem like India will stop importing planes any time soon.

50% indigenous ? So if they crash and their performance are subpar, France will have the perfect scapegoat.

Reminder that it was under Narendra Modi that the MMRCA acquisition for 126 Rafales (108 to be built in India) was cancelled in 2015 due to excessive costs, disputes over technology transfer and liability for work performed in India. More than a decade and two piecemeal, off-the-shelf Rafale acquisitions later, here we are again. Truly this has been a masterful demonstration of how to erode both one's air combat inventory and one's bargaining position.
