Are we talking about the lack of a USA flag?
Or lack of sailors manning the rails as is custom?
The manning of the rails is...IMHO...very sparse.

Maybe I am being overly touchy...but the USS Arizona is hallowed ground to the US. Here's how other vessels did it as they passed the same spot...compare:

Here's a higher resolution photo... It's definitely flying standards, and there are sailors manning the rails.

Doesn't appear to be manning the rails that normally comes to my mind - having crew at most of the edges of the vessel front to back. Here, we see a handful only at certain spots and they seem to be more huddled together observing than standing attention. Don't believe other navies are required to man the rails for Arizona but it is a nice gesture.

the only explanation you will get if you ask the sailors on the sahyadri is that they do not the custom, you must remember that this is the first time an indian naval vessel is visiting , they are sure rectify their mistake next time . the observers they used to send in the earlier years must have failed to breif crew about the customs there. and jeff, in your album rimpac 2014 flickr i you say that an indian p8i is also participating ,but i did not find proof of it in the commanders list of ships participating ,and neither in any of the indian forums

Well, we are glad to see them at RIMPAC 2014.

The did have some personnel out showing their respects...as you can see in the photo. Most nations have an "every man on deck" drill when passing the Arizona memorial. I m sure they will learn of the tradition and perhaps do more.

As it is, it is very interesting, and a good thing for the US to host friendly, worthwhile and valuable exercises like this where nations like China, India, Japan, Australia, etc. can set aside their differences for a time and come together like this.

ASW Dhruv trials
The Dhruv is a decent indigenous helicopter, and is getting some foreign sales.

It looks like they are developing a strong ASW suite.

It is precisely the type of indigenous ASW capability the Indian Navy needs to develop for its vessels, from the carriers. to the Kolkatas, the Shivaliks, the Talwars, and the Kamortas.

It is not a problem.

Under the right lighting conditions and photographic settings, any warship looks this way.

The vessels are built from metal plates that are welded together an the seam lines and the background structure can appear this way in the right lighting when in reality the surface is far smother than such photos may appear.

I've never noticed this on any US ship.
Maybe we have high standards of welding

Good news just in: India's first indigenous P15A destroyer has completed delivery acceptance trials (DAT) and will be officially handed over to the Indian Navy today. The ship will be commissioned soon, likely later this month in Mumbai by Defence Minister Arun Jaitley.

During DATs last month, a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was test-fired from the Kolkata on June 9 off the coast of Karwar. The P15A destroyers will deploy 16 BrahMos in vertical launch config. The Kolkata-class has had its share of turbulence: originally slated for delivery in 2010, the project was slapped back by technical issues, including construction and unusual noise levels during operations. When all of those issues were sorted over three years, a Navy officer was killed in a tragic freak accident in March this year, casting gloom over one of India's most promising indigenous warship lines. With DATs done, she's fully ready for operations. Will post new photos as soon as I get them.

A bare handful of grainy photographs exist in the public domain of Kolkata(D63), the first P15A destroyer that's been delivered to the Indian Navy today by Mazagon Docks Ltd (MDL). Thankfully, not anymore. The photograph above is the first proper image of the destroyer at sea in full operational configuration, with its decks, weapons and sensors clearly visible. This photograph, taken during acceptance trials in the Arabian Sea, provides the first comprehensive visual of the warship.

IAF plans early induction of Rafale
Contract to be signed “Sooner than Later” in current fiscal

New Delhi. India’s negotiations with French Dassault for the acquisition of 126 Rafale Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) “are progressing well” and the contract is likely “sooner than later in the current financial year 2014-15.” This was stated by Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha in a comprehensive interview with India Strategic on the eve of the Farnborough Air Show, the first in fact after he assumed office about six months ago.[...] Air Chief Marshal Raha expressed confidence and observed: “Early induction of LCA and MMRCA has been planned for arresting the drawdown in the strength of fighter squadrons…. IAF is likely to have its sanctioned strength of combat squadrons operational sooner than later.”
[...]
The big issue was the agreement between the vendor, Dassault International, and HAL which is the prime integrator for the project. HAL has negotiated more than 70 per cent work share for itself although Dassault was initially hesitant to agree as there were doubts about the state-run company’s credentials in meeting production timelines. Delays can result in penalties for the French vendor. Nonetheless, this issue is resolved.[...]
