Tejas MK 1/1A -> Mig 21 replacement
Tejas MK2 -> Mirage 2K, Mig-29 UPG , Jaguar replacement
TEDBF -> Mig-29 KUB replacement

The Snap of Indian Air force R-73E Short range air to air missiles mounted on a ZIL truck. Some one had to much time to do this. :p

Earlier suggestions from NCOs and junior officers were limited to just papers and files. If you are lucky enough, some flag officer would give you presentation time.
But, these days those solutions mostly Jerry rigging or innovation as you may see it. are not just welcomed but funding is provided, workshops are opened and technical staff are attached to realise it from a concept to a working prototype.

Insas Bullpup, that we saw earlier from IA officer was such an example. But, after getting 360° input, the second product the team produced, a SMG was closer to production standard.

Except for senior officers, and officers who are involved in ASQR et al. junior staff aren't aware of design specifications, why certain things are designed in a certain way, why alternative design considerations were not selected. This type of activity helps them realise it. When such things will be trialled, they would find out the where the design lacks and why. They will improve upon it.

If I even go back Army workshop had tried two 4x4 mobility platform, Tuffy and Windy. Did it see active service from IA? No. But it was a good effort. Only one out of 10 soulution would be innovative. The innovative element in the design can then be further worked upon.

From the article -

The decision comes just days before US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin's visit to India later this month.

the Navy, Army and the Air Force will finally jointly procure 30 armed versions of the American unmanned aerial system in what could be a $3 billion deal,
....
India was earlier eyeing both the unarmed Sea Guardian drones for the Navy and the armed Predator B for attack options, but there was a growing feeling that both surveillance and attack could be done by the same drone.

This was because of the prohibitive price involving American drones. The Navy had initially planned for 22 Sea Guardians which were priced at over $2 billion, but then brought down the number to just 12.

That's 3 BILLION, With a 'B'.

Make individual conclusions as to the timing and cost of the deal.

Where are India's drones?
Its largely navy's call. But IAF is forced upon by the MoD. A large fiction is happening here.
