You might find this interesting... Of course LCA was an earlier name for the Tejas project. It officially stood for Light Combat Aircraft, but in reality, it really should stand for Lavishly Consulted Aircraft.

Any idea when this was proposed and where this report is from (looks like from Flight International)?
Imagine, if things turned differently, a JF-17 in IAF-colors.

I remember saving this image almost 20 years ago from a now-defunct internet forum, but I don't recall from what publication. The news item was probably published around 25-30 years ago.

India was unlikely to have approached China before 1989 because bilateral relations were in a deep freeze before then. Another clue, the article mentions China's need to replace Mig-21 and Mig-19. The replacements turned out be the Flanker and the J-10, both of which were decided upon sometime in the mid-1990s, when China negotiated local production of the Flanker and 611 was going full steam ahead with the J-10. So the only window of a possible cooperation between India and China was somewhere around 1989 to 1995.
