So I crunched the numbers and this is what I got. As per the indians, a single Mk-1a tejas costs 463 "crore" (like that ever makes sense at all). 463 crore equates to 4.63 billion indian rupees. And 4.63 billion indian rupees is equivalent to $67.6 million for one Mk-1a tejas.

An F-35A Lighting ll is said to cost $65 million per aircraft. JAS-39E Gripen is said to cost around $50 million per aircraft.

I'm guessing tejas is a heck of a lot better aircraft than the JAS-39E Gripen or the F-35A Lightning ll (sarcasm).

Lightning is not that low yet. And I am betting that is a older Grippen.
But I also doubt the pricing listed for the Indian fighter is actual as well. In military buys it's a numbers game, the more you buy the lower the cost as the overhead is spread out to maintain logistics for production and spare parts.

To be honest I think they're just betting that Modi needs to be seen as resolute in his so called Make In India initiative (not made) and will have to accept a high price, or else this may do a bit of political damage to the BJP which personally costs even more to him. I would do the same if I were them.

The latest price, after the current $94 million, will be $88 million for the next LOT.

My guess is that they will ultimately get down into the mid 70s...which is a heck of a good price. But that is USAF pricing for the F-35A.

The F-35B will probably ultimately get down to the mid 80s, and the F-35C will ultimately (IMHO) get down to the mid 90s.

All of these will be US forces pricing.

The Indian Air Force is planning a series of tests to prove the integration potential of some advanced Israeli-developed systems on its Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), Tejas.
