: After 30 years, the Indian Navy will show off its fighter jets and reconnaissance aircraft in the Republic Day military parade.

The Naval contingent will be led by the newly-acquired and made-in-USA long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti -submarine aircraft.

Not entirely surprising, given that US President Barack Obama is the Chief Guest for the event.

Another first for January 26: the Indian Army, Air Force and Navy will each field a contingent of about 150 women officers. This is the first time that woman officers will be part of the Republic Day parade.

In 1984, the Navy flew its then newly-acquired British-made Sea Harriers in the Republic Day parade.

A very young officer Arun Prakash -who would later make Chief of Navy Staff - hovered with the Sea Harrier over Delhi's Vijay Chowk like a helicopter, thrilling spectators.

For three decades, the navy acquired no new fighter jets, so it chose not to put its aircraft on display at Republic Day parades. Now, that has changed. "The new assets have not been displayed yet" a senior naval officer told NDTV," the government wants to display these to the nation."

Besides the US-made aircraft, the newly-acquired Russian-made Mig-29K - the Navy's first supersonic fighter which can fly faster than the speed of sound -will also be part of the Naval fly-past.

The Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R K Dhowan said on Saturday that the Indian Navy has become a Builders' Navy from a Buyers' Navy. "Not a single ship or a submarine is on order any more abroad. Future warships will be built in India," he said during the Second Admiral R L Pereira Memorial Lecture in city.
"In Navy we believe that every ship has a soul. Every ship reflects the personality of the captain. Salt in our blood, sweat and tears same as the salt in the sea," Admiral Dhowan said. He termed Admiral Pereira as a great leader and charismatic person. Admiral Pereira was India's 9th Navy Chief and served from 1979 to 1982. The talk was organized by the Navy Foundation, Bengaluru Chapter in association with Bharat Electronics Ltd.

Maritime patrol stepped up

The Navy Chief said that the maritime patrol along India's coastline has been stepped up to ward-off any possible threats. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the 2nd Admiral R L Pereira Memorial Lecture in city, the Admiral said India's maritime interests will be backed by ‘24x7 surveillance' by the Indian Navy. "As part of the increased security measures in the last few months, we have deployed warships and UAVs," the Navy Chief said. He refused to comment on the ongoing sea trials by INS Arihant.

Navy Chief pats NLCA team

Admiral Dhowan met with the Naval LCA team from Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and congratulated them for the recent successful NP-1 trials in Goa. The NLCA had its maiden flight from the Shore-Based Test Facility (SBTF) in Goa, thereby crossing a critical milestone.

The Navy Chief also interacted with Cmde C D Balaji (Retd) Project Director LCA (Navy) and Commodore Jaideep Maolankar, the pilot who undertook the historic ski-jump take-off from SBTF. Later speaking to OneIndia, Cmde Balaji (Retd) said that the second prototype of NLCA (NP-2) will soon have its maiden flight.

"We are done with most of the tests barring a few. We are hopeful that the NP-2 will have its first flight within a weeks' time," Cmde Balaji (Retd) told OneIndia.

DRDO adds more teeth to Tejas

In a related development, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said on Saturday that an advanced electronic warfare suite (EW suite) developed by Bengaluru-based Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE), was flown on Tejas for the first time. DRDO spokesperson Ravi Gupta said that the Tejas PV1, on which the EW suite was fitted, was also equipped with a jammer. "It gives the pilot an additional capability of nullifying the effect of detected radar threat by appropriate mode of jamming," he said. DRDO chief Dr Avinash Chander said that the warfare suite added an important capability to Tejas. DRDO claimed that Tejas is the first fighter aircraft of India fitted with a radar warner and jammer equipment.

The unsung Hero!
Even during that disaster it was Mi-26s that did all the initial heavy duty work for ground preparation...but the photo session went for the C-130s that came later after conducive ground preparation was done by these silent heros.

the chandigarh gang

Perhaps the dodgiest case is that of the Arjun tank, which has been under development for nearly 40 years. In 2008 the DRDO had to install a black box in the indigenous battle tank following an alleged attempt to “sabotage” its engine. The instrument was installed after the Indian Army termed the winter trial of the Arjun tank a “failure”.

According to a DRDO official, “The German company Renk AG supplying the engines for the Arjun tank stumbled upon the tinkering with its engines after a complaint from the Indian Army that the tank’s gear box failed during its winter trials. Following this we have installed an instrument similar to the data recorder or black box in aircraft that would record all the information related to the engines.”

The then minister of state for defence (production) Rao Inderjit Singh also hinted at a conspiracy. “The possibility of sabotage needs to be examined,” he said. “The engines fitted in the tanks were German and were performing well for the past 15 years. I wonder what has happened to them overnight.”

The players!!

R.S.N. Singh, a former military intelligence officer who later served in the Research & Analysis Wing, writes in Canary Trap about the “Chandigarh Gang” that surfaced as the “mainstay of the international arms lobby” during the decade long UPA rule. “This gang is not necessarily in Chandigarh alone, but nevertheless is centered around it,” Singh writes. “It comprises some retired officers, politicians, journalists and prominent newspapers.”

This sums up all !!

"Indeed, it is intriguing that DRDO projects such as the Agni series intermediate range ballistic missiles (which are banned from the international export market) have been extremely successful, while others such as tanks, aircraft, helicopters and short range missiles (all of which are readily available) are rejected by the defence forces for not being up to scratch."

have completed the preliminary design for the Sukhoi/HAL Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA), the regional director of international cooperation at the united Russian-Indian aircraft manufacturing company said Saturday.
“As of now, we and our Indian colleagues have completed the creation of the export version of the [Sukhoi] PAK FA, known in India as FGFA. We already have documents and understanding of the scope of the next phase of design, the scale of future production,” Andrey Marshankin said in an interview with the Russian News Service radio.

Marshankin noted that while the Russian version of the fifth generation fighter jet is operated by a single pilot, the Indian Air Force prefers aircraft that are operated by two pilots.

“In difficult conditions of modern warfare it is extremely difficult to simultaneously maneuver [the aircraft] and attack the enemy. Currently, the Indian side suggests that the Indian version of the fifth generation fighter will be made for two pilots,” he said.

The Sukhoi PAK FA (T-50) is the Russian Air Force’s first stealth fighter, intended to succeed the Sukhoi Su-27, as well as the Mikoyan MiG-29 fighter jets. The aircraft conducted its first test flight in 2010 and deliveries are set to begin in 2016. The FGFA, developed jointly by Russia’s Sukhoi and India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, is a derivative from the PAK FA.
