This article hit many nails on the head. It pretty much repeats what most of us have been repeating the whole time, these protests are a self-inflicted wound. The reasons mentioned are also why so many HK-origin/descent people here think it is due to outside interference.
Why are so many arrested individuals are undereducated or underemployed? (One guy that was shot was a 19 year old student held back 3 years. 30% of the arrested people are minors.) Simple answer, they are easy to manipulate, especially to act against their own best interests (basically the playbook of the Republican party).
Anyone with half a brain knows that the historical advantages of English fluency and access to overseas education were only temporary at best. Really, 1C2S is the advantage that is most difficult to replicate. Now the NSL and certain changes to mainland laws erodes this.
The reality for most people was very obvious, to preserve the special privileges of 1C2S, you must maintain a certain balance. It is an obvious principle.

I don't think they overplayed it. It just father time waits for no man. Time has moved on. Hong Kong was a very important financial hub. But nowadays mist of these can be had in China, or for the risk adverse in Singapore. Hong Kong just got caught in the middle.
It's a shame. It's my home city, and I have lots of family there. This is going to have a knock on effect.

Hong Kong was a very important financial hub.
They still are , if they changed their attitude and mentality about the mainlanders. There is still growth if they integrate and be part of greater bay area project and also a chance to reinvent itself. I hope they heed President Xi call for HK youth to live, study and work in the mainland. Its a important first step to wean off its insular mentality.

Education could have been one of HK's big export industries, especially after Australia and Canada's anti-China turn. Alas with HKU being the breeding ground for anti-China activism, HK degrees are fast becoming tainted. This year the student with Jiangsu's highest humanities Gaokao score accepted HKU's full scholarship offer after getting cold shoulders from PKU and Tsinghua, and Weibo erupted with people questioning her choice.
