HONG KONG/SYDNEY, Sept 18 (Reuters) - One of the 14 foreign judges on Hong Kong's highest court said he had resigned due to concerns over a sweeping new national security law imposed by Beijing on the former British colony, Australia's national broadcaster reported on Friday.
The office of the city's leader Carrie Lam confirmed the resignation of Australian judge James Spigelman but did not give a reason.

Spigelman, the former Chief Justice of New South Wales, is the first senior judge to resign and publicly criticise the law, passed by China's parliament.
The Polish-born jurist told the ABC that he resigned for reasons "related to the content of the national security legislation" but did not elaborate further.

Spigelman did not immediately respond to a request from Reuters for comment.
His departure comes amid alarm in local and international legal circles at Beijing's imposition of a national security law on the freewheeling financial hub, which boasts an independent legal system based on the common law.

Under the security legislation, Lam has the right to select judges for a panel of jurists to handle national security cases. In the most serious cases, suspects can also be taken to mainland China for trial in its courts that are ultimately controlled by the Communist Party.
"Mr Justice Spigelman tendered to the Chief Executive on 2 September his resignation as a Non-Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal, therefore the Chief Executive revoked his appointment in accordance with the relevant legislation," Lam's office responded in an email to queries about his departure. "Mr Justice Spigelman did not give any reason for his resignation," it said.

A spokesman for the Judiciary said they had no further comment to offer.
Spigelman was re-appointed to another three-year term on the Hong Kong court last year.
Foreign judges have long been considered a symbol of Hong Kong's judicial independence, helping to replace traditional role of the Privy Council in London after Britain handed the city back to Chinese rule in 1997. (Reporting By Greg Torode in Hong Kong and Swati Pandey in Sydney; Editing by Simon Cameron-Moore)

Where in the world would a country allow foreign judges to sit on their court. Could you imagine the uproar if a Chinese judge sit in the US court?

Where's the law and order brigade to come out to tell us how unfair Hong Kongers has been treated. It's funny those members never mention this. Instead they harp on about elections and national security law. Blah blah blah.

Apparently Boris Johnson is using China as an excuse to backtrack on agreements with the EU Great Britain already signed to. If China can do it on Hong Kong, Great Britain can do it for Brexit. Don't you love how the British are the ones beating people over the heads with the rule of law.

This is why anyone who has half a brain doesn’t accept these “rule of law” arguments. Laws are just pieces of paper, history shows us that any government will only follow it when it suits them.

Singapore has them. I’m sure there are more. I think they were a necessity at the time 20 years ago. Reality is that HK did have different laws, and probably not enough judges. Don’t forget that Chinese people were barred from such positions up until basically the 80’s.

All this hostility by US against chinese business and government was amplified by these stupid HK rioters. All those vile memes, articles, twitter, reddit post etc paint worst image of china/chinese in the world. During this heat of HK protest, trade war , national security law, HK should abolish western judicial measures and reform education program and a minimum bail of non-refundable 100k USD should be slapped to any person rioting or violating national security, in street or online.

I know its old, but I never get tired of the west's hypocrisy.

That is why Trump is president.

Large swatches of the American public had enough of their dishonest politicians like Lying Ted and the fake news Liberal media.

The lying politician is supported by the Liberal media. They make it sound like a democratic debate, but what it is, it is just a show, in the end they just want to tell people how they are going to rule you.

There are bread lines in the USA, but we never read many reports about that.

What is the economic picture really like in America? We have to dig real hard to find relevant information.

I truly believe dezinformatsiya is really for domestic audiences, to keep the internal population under control.

How many bread lines are there really in the United States at the moment? No one will investigate. It could be too explosive that information.

100% correct. The disinformation campaign is totally for domestic consumption.
I find more and more people are making blanket statements about how life in China is, without ever setting foot in the country. Police watching in every corner, etc.
Every American seems to fancy themselves a China-Expert and ready to condemn all the evils of the communist party.
The truth is right in front of their face, but it is ignored.
Western feminist movement loves to talk, talk, talk. Hashtag this and that.
Meanwhile women in China are doing things, being CEOs of huge companies, many of the top Covid researchers are women (Shi Zhengli, Chen Wei). Instead of praise, they are denigrated with lies (

2 good news today

HK police revise rules to counter fake journalists

We all remember that amid the social unrest in 2019, some Hong Kong reporters, "fake journalists" and foreign reporters became accomplices as they hindered police operations in the process of law enforcement, verbally attacked police and government officers, and sent police-related information to rioters.

And the government is finally fixing the "liberal studies"

Even if I think that the Liberal Studies must be completely removed it's already a first step
