I wanted to write a point-to-point but there were so many things wrong and made-up due to bias in the article that it would take a ridiculous amount of time even formatting the post. Why did you recommend an article so poorly written by someone so imaginatively biased (or ignorant)? Where did you see value in reading this?

Because that's the fact on the ground. The fact is that when lies become something people are willing to strongly believe, fight, and die for, it becomes political ideology. That's why you got to be willing to step into your enemies' shoes in order to understand why they are staunchly opposed to what you believe in. If you want to defeat your enemy, you got to understand where they are coming from, what their values are, and why they are willing to fight. I think both Chinese and non-Chinese have been shocked to find out how assertive HKers are in opposing Beijing. Yet, nobody on Beijing's side seem willing to understand his or her opponents. HKers are ethnic Chinese who grow up studying political liberalism and market economy, despite being UK's second-class citizens. How do you expect them to think and behave like Mainland Chinese - who grew up seeing the success of the CCP political mobilizations, experiencing a dual economy where private firms support state industries in implementing state's developmental goals, and glorification of a strong central Party State in executing developmental goals and lifting millions out of poverty? In fact, many older-generation HKers were losers of the CCP's political agenda and victims of CCP's political persecutions from the 1940's to 1970s (before Reform and Opening up). Yes, HKers welcome business opportunities resulting from China's post-1978 economic reform, but they will never trust the CCP Party State due to historical and ideological reasons. However, from a Mainlander's perspective, of course the HKers are nothing but traitors working with the PRC's strategic competitors in splitting China and not appreciating what the PRC has achieved since 1978. The bottom line is that HKers and Mainland Chinese experienced completely different histories and political ideologies.

First of all, Beijing is A LOT wiser and more insightful about this whole Hong Kong mess than you can imagine.

Beijing's refusal to even listen to what these rioters are saying are exactly what a political party like the CCP should do, the CCP that is harden by almost a century of non-stop struggles against numerous powerful enemies, in which it survived and thrived. This is because the rioter not only has no real power or advantage what-so-ever against the CCP, everything they have done so far has also worked to their disadvantage. The worst is, Hong Kong is not even a Chinese city in terms of taxation, legal jurisdiction. It has its own borders, so CCP does even need to worry about any protests sparking a chain reaction that could undermine its taxable economy, or the order of the core of its industrial. This is why this is incomparable to 1989 in Beijing. HKers has been rioting for weeks now, and how much did it affect the real economy and military industrial might of mainland China? Not even a dent! However, imagine this same thing happening in Shenyang, or Shanghai, or Chengdu. Haha, if that happens, I am afraid that a lot of our SDF thread will have to be abandoned! That would mean byebye 003, byebye J-20, byebye J-16.

They were uneven to begin with, and the HK rioter did the stupidest thing to antagonize the entire Mainland Chinese population. I can see the palm-faced British Geo-Strategy expert agonizingly moaning: "you are supposed to divide you enemies!", "Divide and Conquer, three words, how difficult can it be!".

The idiotic HK rioters who did nothing but united the mainlanders and tears up HK society. Of course they could be more radical and create real trouble for the HK government by really going rogue, maybe create a bomb attack or arson attack on important building. Yes, that will turn this into terrorism. But, this would make the HK government a failed government, and forcibly draw PAP forces into HK. This is where the rioters can really fight the CCP like guerrilla fighters in urban environment. That would an audacious but extremely effective move.

Yet, what did they do? They revert back to that meaningless peaceful rally, against which the police didn't even have to fire tear gas.

The HK rioters are laughable now. They were much braver and effective when they actually did something like vandalizing the legislature hall, occupying the subway system and the Airport.

But this article wasn't written by any Hong Konger; it was written by a Nick Taber and published in a small Western outlet. It doesn't represent what Hong Kongers think; it represents what an anti-Chinese Westerners imagines is going on. This person at most has visited China a few times, looking for evidence to fit into his story while writing off counter-evidence as state veneer. I can understand the value of trying to understand what Hong Kongers think to win a mental victory but this piece is useless for that. This is Western propaganda that only pulls further from the truth; it does not contain any keys to understanding between the Chinese in Hong Kong and Mainland but contains only fabricated toxin designed to divide Chinese people against each other and their government.

I think when it comes to trying to understand the rioters, the videos of them arguing are the best we have.

This article only serves to show that Western media attempts to vilify China through both ignorance and dishonesty, and we already knew that.

Beijing don't even need to lift a finger. They are winning the support of the mainland populace with each day the hong Kong rioters are causing mayhem and disruption and the attack on the national flag and mainland people. Notice even the overseas students from mainland are getting more patriotic and united behind their country. All thanks to the action of the rioters.

I see some similarities to the time of pre Beijing Olympics when there was protests and attacks during the torch bearers route. The Chinese people got behind the nation, instead of weakening Beijing government, the attacks actually strengthened their position in China and rise in patriotism.

HK previous generation grew up as colonial citizens who can't vote for their leaders where protesting against the crown is viewed as treasonous. The current generation grew up as SAR citizens. They have more freedom then their predecessors.

Twitter deletes thousands of accounts "suspected" to be run by Chinese agencies. Hummmm.
So much for freedom of information! Is this the begining of censorship and information war?

Pence threaten China over Hong Kong. Lol
He also links it to the trade war. (showing how desperate by Trump for a trade deal). Basically saying trade deal is in danger if China does not respect the rule of law in Hong Kong!

WOW, the arrogance of it, I'm lost for words, someone please help!

Speaking as someone who was Her Majesty's Colonial subject. I can give first hand account of being second class citzens in our own city.

For examples, certain area are off limits to Chinese people. All higher rank police officers jobs are strictly reserved for English. In fact, all these positions are filled by ex-Police officers from the UK (when these officers were just normal plain bobbys)

And all government premises including schools primary upwards will have a portrait of Queen Elizabeth hanging proudly in the classroom. Could you imagine the uproar from the current mob if a portrait of Xie was hanging in every public establishment!

We are disclosing a significant state-backed information operation focused on the situation in Hong Kong, specifically the protest movement and their calls for political change.

What we are disclosing
This disclosure consists of 936 accounts originating from within the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Overall, these accounts were deliberately and specifically attempting to sow political discord in Hong Kong, including undermining the legitimacy and political positions of the protest movement on the ground. Based on our intensive investigations, we have reliable evidence to support that this is a coordinated state-backed operation. Specifically, we identified large clusters of accounts behaving in a coordinated manner to amplify messages related to the Hong Kong protests.

As Twitter is blocked in PRC, many of these accounts accessed Twitter using VPNs. However, some accounts accessed Twitter from specific unblocked IP addresses originating in mainland China. The accounts we are sharing today represent the most active portions of this campaign; a larger, spammy network of approximately 200,000 accounts — many created following our initial suspensions — were proactively suspended before they were substantially active on the service.

All the accounts have been suspended for a range of violations of our

  • Coordinated activity
  • Fake accounts
  • Attributed activity
  • Ban evasion

Next steps
Covert, manipulative behaviors have no place on our service — they violate the fundamental principles on which our company is built. As we have said before, it is clear that information operations and coordinated inauthentic behavior will not cease. These deceptive strategies have been around for far longer than Twitter has existed. They adapt and change as the geopolitical terrain evolves worldwide and as new technologies emerge. For our part, we are committed to understanding and combating how bad-faith actors use our services.

Today we are adding archives containing complete Tweet and user information for the 936 accounts we’ve disclosed to our archive of information operations — the largest of its kind in the industry.

We will continue to be vigilant, learning from this network and proactively enforcing our policies to serve the public conversation. We hope that by being transparent and open we will empower further learning and public understanding of these nefarious tactics. You can access relevant information on these account sets below.

August 2019, set 2:

Note: We have divided these archives into two parts to better enable review of the intersecting networks of accounts which comprise this campaign. We have evidence to indicate that both sets are associated with the same entity.
