Hong-Kong Protests

Unless these people formally renounced their HK residency status, HK has to take them back. I am hoping China National Congress would formally interpret the dual citizenship law in HK and declared anyone holding a BNO would lose its HK residency status.
Doesn't seeking political asylum mean they cannot take it anymore and do not want to belong in HK anymore. This intent is clear and equivalent to renouncing their HK residency. Perhaps HK just needs to pass a law to that effect.

Except for a few fugitives that seek political asylum in UK, German, and Taiwan, most of these Hong Kongers are just taking advantages of new special visa for HKers such as special visa granted for BNO passports holders by UK. As for the HK fugitives, HK would prefer to extradite and prosecute them so their passports and HK documents would be suspended but they would still be considered HK residents for the future extradition process.

When US cops take an Oath of Honor, it is normal and unremarkable.

When Hong Kong cops take a similar oath, the New York Times calls it "stifling democratic opposition".
Not only do cops have to do that, but also every public servant in the US has to swear an oath to be loyal to the US and the constitution. Only traitors dislike these oaths and such people should not be allowed to particpate in anything government related.

"Foreign buyers are driving up real estate!" is the number 1 racist trope in Canada (IMO).

#1 target is Chinese, #2 are Middle Easterners (Arabs and Persians).
Most Chinese people were complaining this was racist tail wagging, but still the politicians and media still tried to push this narrative. Real Estate associations tried to persuade otherwise, but they were dismissed as having a hand in the pot (which is somewhat true to be fair).

Now in light of the pandemic, immigration has dropped, international student enrollment has dropped, travel outside China has dropped. Average detached home prices in Toronto... surprise, record highs!

Obviously with an influx of investors, the demand will rise and prices will as well. However, people in Toronto just have unrealistic expectations. It's really just comes down to simple mathematics. Population has grown, city can't grow physically, also less supply of detached homes as they get torn down for condos/higher density development. There's no real logic to "native" Canadians' belief that somehow people deserve to live in a nice house with a yard other than that's probably the environment they grew up in. However, almost every other big city in the world, an apartment is the norm.
Yes it's ironic that one of the reasons why Hong Kongers riot is because they blame mainland Chinese for driving up real estate prices and rent. So who's getting into Great Britain under the guise of political oppression? The people who make money from driving up prices or the people who protest it's too high?

It's more of a sign of late-stage capitalism but they want to blame China rather than do anything about it because the rich locals are getting money from mainlanders. Unless there is state intervention, a society becomes increasingly renting-seeking as the rich who want more money and growth but are risk-averse will attempt to earn "passive income" by increasing their share of the wealth at the expense of the lower and middle classes. Instead of allowing 'creative destruction' to occur which will generate growth and vitality, the rich will choose extractive but safe investments like real estate.

They push out the competition buy outbidding the competition and slowly drive up prices so the poor and middle class cannot buy them and then slowly bleed them dry through rent and lease payments. It's a safe investment with guaranteed returns for the rich unlike no-name start-ups or unproven technologies but it ultimately hinders social mobility and opportunity for everyone else.

This why here in the USA, the average American has meager savings but enormous debt. They are so overleveraged that many are defaulting on car loans worth more than their car and borrowing money to make installment payments for small online purchases. It's really sad because even in digital-space that things are increasingly becoming subscription-based because we are living in a modern feudal system. The rich are the new nobility and the people are the new peasants who are indentured permanently because they cannot afford to own any personal property.

Fine then. Suspend their passport and HK document with an option to revoke their residency status if they do not surrender to HK authorities for clarification after a predetermine duration of time. They can then dump the undesirable and concentrate extradition effort on the real fugitives.
