The desperation from the Hong Kong journalist association is getting.... rather sad. They try to justify their journalists attempts at deliberately distorting the fact. And in doing so, exposed themselves to what they really are. Scumbag used condoms.
Here they are saying that the Hong Kong government themselves admitted only 80% of the cans supplied comes with self opening ring. As such implying that the cans they photoed could be the other 20% without pull ring.
Mmmmm. Let's see. The can of dice fish is my fav fish in the can. It is the oval shaped can we all see. Never in my life except maybe when I was young did I ever see that types of can without easy pull ring.
And the fact they need to turn over all the cans should tell you what they are up to. The journalist association is embarrassing themselves. The more they try to justify, the more they are making a mockery of themselves.
Now what was that old saying? Oh yeah, when you are in a hole, stop digging!

就近日各方針對香港電台新聞部有關佐敦封鎖區域的報道，指控其內容有預設立場，記協十分關注事件，指出有人利用內容爭議攻擊媒體，甚至質疑有關報道含政治動機，行為不負責任及罔顧事實。記協重申，新聞工作者忠誠地履行其第四權天職，任何惡意指控，絕非文明社會所能接受，呼籲有關人士立即停止政治抹黑。
港台的報道內容提及「本台記者獲發的物資袋，有5包即食麵、一袋通心粉、4罐罐頭及一盒粟米粒，而賓館未有罐頭刀及煮食工具提供。」報道刊出後隨即有人提出質疑，指政府派發的罐頭全是易拉罐，毋須使用罐頭刀，並藉此指控港台報道內容失實。
我們必須在此指出，報道內容是否失實誤導，公眾可循其他媒體的報道、政府的公布等，自行作出判斷。事實上，政府的官方社交平台帖文已確認當日派發的罐頭中，只是八成有「拉環」設計，並非全部均為易拉罐。換言之，公眾可以理解餘下兩成罐頭需要使用罐頭刀。
事實爭議容易釐清，最令人擔心的卻是有人利用報道內容爭議作為大肆攻擊媒體可信度及新聞專業的「彈藥」，混淆公眾視聽。報道刊出後，旋即出現大量針對港台的批評，包括指責港台「蓄意誤導市民」、「用意是批評政府派發的物資不夠周到」、「濫用權力」、「記者喪盡專業」、「政治抹黑」、「雞蛋裏挑骨頭」，甚至要求「整頓港台」等等。
監察政府、報道事實真相是新聞工作者的天職，任何人惡意對媒體發動攻擊、抹黑，企圖令媒體噤聲，均會對言論自由及新聞自由造成侵害，必須立即停止。

What exactly is going on? Why is this even news?
Are can openers (can-knife?) not a common item in HK?
In a way this is good news. If the worst thing to complain about is something like this, then it tells you how well things are going.
Black bean and fish, and Spam/Luncheon meat were my favourites growing up. Both could be opened without tools coincidentally. However, as a kid, I didn't have the manual dexterity. Now I think they are gross, lol.
This is not directly HK related, but would like to know people's thoughts.
Seems to me like Apple Daily is still unimpeded.
A few quick observations...
- Looking at the English vs. the Chinese is completely different. I can't fully read all the Chinese, but there is the chat transcription which is missing from the English as a start. Goes to demonstrate the theory "The medium is the message/massage". Is the English language article trying to influence western audiences?
- The update (sourced by someone who is Chinese literate) basically debunked the article

There was a story in the US years back how the can food industry was dying because it was one of those things millennials don't buy just because they don't know how to use a can opener. Then COVID-19 hit and canned food was flying off the shelves and the canned food industry was skyrocketing. I had made a comment on an article how the US was probably going to see a rise in deaths among millennials due to not knowing how to use a can opener. I got such a huge reaction where half of the people got the joke while the other half were millennials being offended.
you young lads might not remember but before pull tabs,cans came with a key. along the spine of the key was a slot which fitted into the flap on the side of the can. you then turned the key in a winding up motion which open up the top. Meanwhile I still prefer to use one of these old fashioned can openers
They should be given to all those rioters who want food handouts. They can always use it for seppuku if they don't know what to do with it.
