Hong-Kong Protests

The bill is nothing more than a PR exercise to demonised China, and for home consumption. It does nothing to the situation.

I mean, come on, if USA is seriously concerned about democracy and human rights, then it should start with their biggest customers and allies! They area shining example of democracy and a beacon for human rights! Right?

The bill is not just for home consumption though domestically it is a significant step towards institutionalizing anti-China behavior for the long term. The primary immediate purpose is to lend legitimacy to the rioters and their co-conspirators and to further inflame tensions.

At the risk of being accused of being a 5 毛, here I am earning another 5 毛!

The school is being slapped in the face, because she dared to disagree with the "freedom loving democracy loving" cohorts!

Yeap. It might ir might not be representative of the "freedom loving" demonstrators. But it is the reality on the ground, and no one made this up!

Just from the video it is unclear what this was about but it is clear that the girl was being physically assaulted and bullied.

Yeah, you are right! The long term goal is to make it "legitimate" like the Taiwan relations act. The freedom of navigation.
But what ever, China can't control that. What China can do is reciprocate, pass laws on Hawaii, etc.

I think the captions on the link said the girl was bullied for tearing down "the wall". (the posters on the wall).

Also, I can't quite make out what was said at the very begining, but it did went on about name calling. And the girl doing the bullying was swearing like those rioters, fxxk your mother.

So I tend to believe it is "the pro-democracy" side doing the bullying.
But even thats not the case. I think the bully thinks its ok to do this, because of what they see the older girls are doing on the street!

Exactly. China can do that and it'd send out a statement. But it would not have much real world impact vis-a-vis a US passed bill as US sanction machinery works on the dominant power of US Dollar, Economy and alliance with economically powerful nations. But as noted by HK people themselves - the bill , if passed, would be the ringing of death bells for HK economy. HK economic situation has worsened lately - simply because HK economy relies on the sectors of transshipment, Finance and services. These sectors (especially the finance one) need stability and confidence above all. The recent protests may have destroyed or atleast fractured the confidences and stability. At the end of the day, the only thing remaining for HK would be the much westernized legal apparatus of HK that is very conductive of transactions and deals of the Globalist capitalism.
There is high chance that the US bill won't be passed on both the House floors and then there is the Trump factor. Trump may want another card in his duel with China and he may think this is one. HK is well past the glory days... this protest will be of great significance to HK future and prosperity.

The worse for HK ? It will become a la Lebanon and later the infamous West Bank.
Oh well.

Hawaii works, perhaps Guam, Diego Garcia, and other US colonial holdings where there is definitely room for improvement towards "freedom and democracy".

Ultimately the best response is for China to successfully integrate Hong Kong and Taiwan.

If U.S. congresscritters think they can apply American domestic laws to a region of a strong, fully sovereign power like China, they are delusional. Let's wait and see if Trump will sign it into law. Remember, Trump did not sign the TPP after all.

The bills also only passed committee so neither the House nor Senate had passed them yet.

This is a breath of fresh air. An english lecturer (I assumed) telling students that what they are doing is not only stupid but anti-productive! I must say I couldn't agree more!
