the H-6 is intended to carry a new airborne luncher carrying small sattelites into low orbit.
That's an interesting development! It's a new confirmation of H-6 utility as very versatile platform.
China may also start building them for export again to nations that

When Egypt switched sides to the US after that conflict, spares and some complete B-6 aircraft were obtained from Red China. Egyptian Badgers saw more combat during a four-day border clash with Libya in 1977. Egyptian Tu-16s also participated in combat exercises with US forces. By the early 1990s, the fleet was being scaled back, and the last Egyptian Badgers were retired in 2000.
* Indonesia obtained 25 Tu-16KS machines in 1961, but spares supplies dried up following a break in relations with the USSR in 1965, and the aircraft were soon grounded.

New redisigned H-6K

This was posted on Huitong's site:

The first glimpse of H-6K cruise missile carrier prototype (#001) is shown here. This new variant first flew on January 5, 2007 at XAC. Its major improvement was speculated to be replacing two fuel-thirsty WP-8/AM-3 turojet engines with Russian D-30 series turbofan engines (D-30KP?), resulting in a greater range and a higher cruise speed. Other improvements include a redesigned solid nose housing a bigger search radar, 6 underwing missile pylons and use of composite materials to reduce weight. At least 7 KD-88 stand-off ASMs may be carried including the one underneath the fuselage. H-6K is capable of flying strategic missions with future generation of Chinese long-range curise missiles.

Here's a new and slightly larger picture of the H-6K .... I'm still not sure abaout the option of being re-engined but looks quite real !?!

From that angle, it looks like only slight design changes. The first pic that came out which was on my last post looked like the entire nose/cockpit was redesigned and much rounder. The H-6 is an ugly bomber. I thought there was actually hope of a more modern redesign. Time to make way for a new range bomber. I hope China gets something like the Su-34 to replace these antiques.

Re: H-6 bomber thread

is it me or do the missiles on that thing look nothing like yj-8 series? I fail to see the midbody wings, plus their overall size seems slightly off.
Also, I see no underbelly missile - and if we're talking about wingless missiles being mounted in the weapons bay - there could be space for more than one.

Even more curiously, doesn't the shape of the intake look different than on some h-6 pics we've seen? look at some old h-6 pics and compare. On old ones its more of an oval shape, here its an oval that has been squished from the top.

Finally, IF indeed the plane has been modified to have newer turbofans, been made ligther with composites, has a new, bigger radar and the ability to carry 6,7 or more cruise missiles - that is quite enough for china today. Not to say they should not develop true next gen bomber, but with little money and little development time they have acquired a fairly efficient missile carrying platform.

I completely agree with You with Your observations ... You were just faster than me with Your comments, THANKS !!

Re: H-6 bomber thread

From what I can tell in that image and that CG, it looks like the air intakes have been modified somewhat. They seem slightly larger in those images compared to the previous one, by comparing it to the fuselage. If this is true, it leads me to believe that the aircraft has been re-engined.

Re: H-6 bomber thread

Does anyone have some more data on these two engines esp. the dimensions as it would be interesting to know if this is a new-built machine or if the D-30 are an option for a refit ?
