StarCraft II's Chinese servers have finally returned. Previously, all Blizzard games withdrew from the Chinese market due to a major dispute between Blizzard and NetEase.

However, I now spend more time on Mihoyo games and other military-themed titles. Red Alert 3's Corona MOD is also a game I really enjoy.

Statues lovingly reassembled too?

When I think of Red Alert 3...

Kinda surprised EA haven't scrubbed it from the internet yet tbh.

When the Blizzard/NetEase arrangements fell apart a few years ago, NetEase staff smashed a statue of the "Gorehowl" axe from World of WarCraft that was previously on display:

As it turns out, they did actually replace the statue last year, it is now a

Wow, there’s a clip in here that happened at a past Game Developers Conference where a Japanese game developer asked American game developers if they were inspired by any Japanese games. The guy straight up and says Japanese games suck. It’s especially poetic now since most American games are having a hard time.

I once said in group that I like prime rib and someone jump in and said I was admitting Asians were inferior to whites because I liked an American dish. That’s why you’ll have a hard time finding someone like him admitting that someone from another race does anything better than a white person. That’s what’s white supremacy is all about. You can never admit someone else does it better or else how can you feel superior?

It seems that clip is from 2012. Obviously the person who said that is a dickhead, but I think it's widely recognised that the Japanese games industry struggled with the transition to the "HD" era on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. That era required new game engines and workflows, larger teams, higher budgets and longer development cycles. Nintendo rather famously noped out of the whole affair. These days at least, the Japanese industry seems to be in a

.

In a world where four of the last eight TGA GotY awards have gone to Japanese-developed games (Astro Bot, Elden Ring, Sekiro, Breath of the Wild), I think it's hard to support the idea that there is a systematic bias against Japanese games in the west. People will always have their preconceptions and misconceptions that limit their ability to step outside their existing comfort zone, but I don't think the world is full of folks who despise or dismiss games based upon their nations of origin (or the cultures they depict). Rather, it's full of folks who have yet to find a path to appreciating certain games. The conversation continues, and each game is a new opportunity.
