Obviously the person who said that is a dickhead, but I think it's widely recognised that the Japanese games industry struggled with the transition to the "HD" era on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. That era required new game engines and workflows, larger teams, higher budgets and longer development cycles. Nintendo rather famously noped out of the whole affair. In a world where four of the last eight TGA GotY awards have gone to Japanese-developed games (
Astro Bot,
Elden Ring,
Sekiro,
Breath of the Wild), I think it's hard to support the idea that there is a systematic bias against Japanese games in the west. People will always have their preconceptions and misconceptions that limit their ability to step outside their existing comfort zone, but I don't think the world is full of folks who despise or dismiss games based upon their nations of origin (or the cultures they depict). Rather, it's full of folks who have yet to find a path to appreciating certain games. The conversation continues, and each game is a new opportunity.
