Surely the humiliation will be all the greater, now.

China conducts this grand show of force, meant, in part, to put the past humiliation behind them, and then immediately after up pops the US sailing past down the straight as if nothing has changed.
No, something has changed: it'll be escorted by a massive show of force that wasn't possible in 1996, just like it did in the SCS with a smaller show of force.

What use is there if the USS Reagan or other aircraft carriers will only come to Taiwan strait in the future? Likely after the current drills ended? What signal does that send to Taiwan, and to US allies and enemies around the world? Last time in 1996 the US sent two carrier battles groups and 40+ ships into Taiwan strait DURING the drills. Not AFTER
That's actually US propaganda. The US announced sailing their ships toward China near the end of the exist knowing that by the time they got there, the exercise would have ended to make it look like they were scared of the carriers.

But according to Chinese military, the carrier groups weren't anywhere else the Taiwan strait at that time and they only send a spy ship off the coast.

The carriers came much later.

I understand that, and maybe you're right. If the US is not going to send an aircraft carrier then maybe it is them that look humiliated.

But in just a few days!

I don't think any laws or rules or norms come into it at this point - not that the US has any continuity of its own in that regard anyway.

China just closed communications channels with the U.S. military. It is highly risky to conduct a freedom of passage trip so close to the mainland.

What I mean is the international legality of the area means that only an overwhelming show of force would have a positive polticial statement.

As an example, if China sent the Liaoning CSG to international waters outside Hawaii, the US would not be humiliated because it can just send many more ships to surround it. Whereas if say a few years down the line, there are many more PLA CSGs and they send 4 with US being unable to muster anything close in the region to meet them, it would look bad for America.

Just one CV isn't enough in any case to be such an example of overwhelming force. In that case, it is smarter to send 1 or 2 escorts rather than the CV itself, because it looks better if the escorts are surrounded compared to if the Reagan itself gets surrounded.

Chinese netizens on Friday heatedly discussed the detailed maps of Taiwan island cities provided by Baidu and Gaode map services, which allegedly became newly available since Thursday, the day the People's Liberation Army kicked off live-fire missile drills surrounding the island following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's reckless visit to the island.

The main statements of the Chinese Foreign Ministry:

- China suspends dialogue with the United States at the level of regional military commands;

- China cancels working meetings with representatives of the US Department of Defense;

- China temporarily suspends cooperation with the United States in the field of combating illegal migration;

— China suspends cooperation with the United States in the fight against drugs;

— China suspends Sino-US talks on climate change;

- China suspends cooperation with the United States in the field of justice;

— China suspends cooperation with the United States in the fight against international crime.
Fentanyl is back on the menu?
From little cooperation to zero cooperation, guess it only benefits the drug cartels.
