FN-6 in use in Syria

AQ getting their hands on FN-6s is bad news. I hope China is more careful with their arms sales.

Sigh, this is exactly what I am worried about - China getting the blame if an FN-6 was used to bring down a civilian airliner even though it is most likely the west and its Gulf allies that supplied the rebels with these missiles in the first place. Which might be why they decided to supply FN6s in the first place rather than another more commonly available missiles.

It is very unlikely that these missiles were captured from Syrian government forces because 1) there has never even been a hint or rumour of FN6 sales to Syria 2) the rebels posted videos of their MANPADS capture and all the missiles shown were either SA17 or SA24s.

It also won't not make sense for the missiles and operators to be from Iran. There has never been any reports of FN6 sales to Iran, and more importantly, Iran is on Assad's side, so it makes absolutely no sense for Iranians to be working with the rebels to bring down government helicopters.

I still think Qatar or one of the other Gulf states is the most likely source of these missiles. The only problem is I am having trouble confirming any FN6 sales to them.

is there some statement or will be from the Chinese government or military about these events?

Other than negotiation between the Syrian government and the rebels for a peace deal, I doubt you will hear anything about the use of the FN-6 by the Chinese government and military officials. Both sides apparently are using weapons from all over the world including the classics such as the Ak-74 and RPGs and so forth.

Either that's a previously undisclosed military sale to Syria, or the most likely source would be:

1. Smuggled-out stash from Pakistan, whom the ISI have shady ties with Taliban and AQ-affillated militants; or
2. Sudan, either from Sudanese Army stock or captured samples during the civil war got into the black market somehow.

Pakistan is the most likely route, they have the experience and connection from contacts Gulf/Saudi financier to training mujaheddin operators from the previous Stinger deal. Also, they are the major FN-6 operator. Malaysia I believe is the only country with a tech transfer and can build the missiles under license, however, I doubt they are supplying though. But you never know.

I agree - don't expect to hear anything from the government on the subject of Chinese weapons being used in this conflict. It was the same in Libya...where there's a will, there's a way. Everything imaginable turned up there. M-4, P-90, G-36. When it came to the G-36 appearing in rebel hands, the German government remained silent on the issue.

They appears to be from Turkey... Purchased before.... Pakistan?

Another opposition figure involved in supplying the rebels said there had been a noticeable relaxation in recent days of the strict restrictions the US and Turkey had put on arms flows over the Turkish border. He claimed a Syrian army helicopter and a Mig warplane had been shot down in the past two days, for the first time by imported missiles.

"These were not weapons that had been captured from Syrian army bases as before. These were released from the Turkish warehouses. These are weapons the opposition had purchased previously but had not been allowed to take across the border," the opposition source said

if ISI was supply MANPADS then Afghans would be knocking out NATO and ISAF helos and fighter aircraft in Afghanistan like they did to the Soviets, thats not the case

Pakistan policy is never to be involved in muslim vs muslim issue, even during the Iran-Iraq war Pakistan never interfered, only after Saudi requests did we send forces to Saudi in 1991

on the other hand you can not discount back channels which may have ended up being used, but these are few and far between cases of helo shot downs, nothing on mass has been supplied otehrwise the skys above Syria would have been cleared long time ago

The Russians are not going to like this news. They're not going to give up that Naval base in Syria over to the rebels anytime soon.

Russia lose more than their precious little Naval base if they pour resource and prestige into Assad, and he loses to the rebels anyway.
