Single engines jets are especially vulnerable. Just compare the number of F-16 losses versus F-15 losses or J-10 losses versus flanker losses.
That may have been an issue in the past, but how true is it today with modern jet engines?

The modern variants of the F-16 has a slightly higher failure rate than the F-15, but the F-22 is higher than the F-35.

So prelim disclosure from the Air Force the F-35 was on approach at dusk when visibility was low and the pilot lost control. Exact cause is now being investigated. Pilot ejected safely, plane was completely destroyed.

lol wut? The footage looked like daytime to me.
The kid in that clip says smoke was bellowing out of the plane which to me means some sort of engine malfunction. Why are they talking about poor visibilty?

And what's with the appeal for more eyewitnesses? The pilot is okay, why not just ask him what happened?

That news reporter also said The F-35 was returning "in the dusk sky". So yeah, I'm sure they're also just repeating the Air Force's own statement.

The appealing for witnesses is likely just a standard procedure for the accident investigation board for a more complete picture of the crash as it occurred from any possible 3rd person perspectives throughout the timeline which obviously you can't get from just the pilot himself.
