The Government Accountability Office, in its latest assessment of the F-35 program, is calling on Congress to block all funding on the next developmental increment of the jet until the Pentagon can provide a new cost assessment in an effort to avoid authorizing billions on a program before the real costs are understood. There has been substantial progress on the F-35 program, and the Pentagon is looking to build on that with a request for $9.8 billion in 2019, according to the

, released Tuesday. “However, in its rush to cross the finish line, the program has made some decisions that are likely to affect aircraft performance and reliability and maintainability for years to come,” said the GAO. Sustainability costs and spare parts shortages are already impacting the fleet, and need to be addressed. The GAO calls on Congress to block funding for Block 4 development until the Pentagon produces a report of a complete acquisition program baseline, including an independent cost estimate, technology readiness assessments, a test and evaluation master plan, a system engineering plan, a preliminary design review, and an approved acquisition strategy. The GAO also calls on the Pentagon to resolve critical deficiencies before a full rate production decision and update the F-35’s reliability and maintainability improvement program, suggestions the Defense Department agreed with. F-35 Program Executive Vice Adm. Mat Winter in a statement said there were no surprises in the report, and there are already actions in progress to address the deficiencies the GAO identified.

One question for each one of the f35 defenders What happens when let' say oh Russia and or perhaps China gets their greedy little hands on the hard drive and software systems and shuts every single 35 down with some type of super virus that no one right now sees or knows about remember the 35's main selling point is stealth and the ability to commuicate with other birds and don' say it can't happen either
If they could do that then all the legacy birds are dead to. They all use flyby wire save for the Harrier and the oldest birds in the bone yards.

I find it funny that you liked that one Dtulsa as The fact is if someone could spread such a Virus as effectively It wouldn't just ground the F35. It would also likley attack the Systems most military fighters and Aircraft built or upgraded in the last 20-30 years because they all have some form of data link and computerized fly by wire control save perhaps the Iranians. Yet then again thats the UBER weapon threat, In the same league as Skynet and EMP where one attack suddenly renders the US a post apocalyptic destopia in the Vein of Homeland and Red dawn.

Well I was being specific to this thread but such a virus surely would disable most of our defense and civilian infrastructure it seems as though we as a society have become way to dependent on the tech. And most likely would totally lost without it for quite some time all one has to do is look how we are posting on this very forum right now to see that instead of picking up a phone and talking

I'll say it! "IT Can't Happen", no doubt the F-35 has been hardened against cyber and EM attacks,,, it seems rather naïve to suppose that nobody at LockMart or in the US Military has forseen the attempts of our enemies to HACK our birds... so we probably ought to give the good folks in the US Military and LockMart a little bit of credit! since they have been designing, building, and flying "stealthy aircraft" since the late 50's, and very successfully I might add, we owe them a tremendous debt of honor and gratitude for providing us with the equipment necessary to win!

Well if your talking bout the SR71 then your right but that bird wasn dependent on tech as the new ones are and remember please the 35 uses a ALIS system for maintaining and logistics if somehow that could be infected them it has exactly the same effect total shutdown of the fleet

LOL, can't resist to wonder if an Infantry Squad members are able to take the azimuth (using compass), or they're GPS only these days
Funny you they just ran an exercise with the Marines doing that very thing gu ess what they were lost for quite a while till some of them figured how to use a map and compass
