Naval Today said:
Fincantieri and Finmeccanica will build and equip the units set out in the renewal plan of the Italian Navy’s fleet.

In the framework of this plan, OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Cooperation sur l’Armement), the international organization for cooperation on arms, has signed the order for the construction of six patrol vessels (PPA, or Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Ships), with four more in option, and for one logistic support unit (LSS or Logistic Support Ships) with the consortium (Raggruppamento Temporaneo di Impresa – RTI) consisting of Fincantieri, agent, and Finmeccanica, through its subsidiary Selex ES, principal.

The value of the contracts for the seven units is approx. 3.5 billion euros, of which Fincantieri’s share amounts to approx. 2.3 billion euros and the one of Finmeccanica to about 1.2 billion euros.

The contracts provide different activation phases. Today OCCAR has started Phase 1 for the construction of the first PPA and the logistic support unit for a total value of 372 million euros, of which Fincantieri’s share amounts to 220 million euros and Finmeccanica’s one to 152 million euros. The activation of the next phases concerning the other units is expected to take place in the upcoming months.

The delivery of the logistic support unit is scheduled for 2019, while the first patrol vessel is expected to be delivered in 2021.

The delivery of the following patrol vessels is planned for 2022, 2023, 2024 (two units) and 2025.

Two variants OPV and FFG for replace 6 Minerva and 4 Fulgosi Corvettes but used as OPV in more Minerva have a Sea Sparrow launcher.

Futur CS for replace the two small Stromboli.

A European Navy very lucky !
Yes.

They will have:

02 x Horizon
10 x FREMM (4 ASW, 4 GP, and 2 AAW)
10 x PPA (OPV and FFG as you described)

That's 22 very modern and capable major surface combatants for Italy (not including Carriers, LHDs, etc.).

By comparison, the UK will have 19 major surface combatants (6 Type 45 Daring DDGs, and 13 Type 026 FFGs).

Does anybody know who is the manufacturer of the Sachsen's class navigation radars? Most of the sources mention the Raytheon (Redpath), others the STN, but from this photo of 2011, I see SAM (Electronics) inscribed on the radar.

Also what is the purpose of these small radomes and the omni (receiver?) which appears as a 2nd mast on the Brandenburg and Sachsen class frigates? Is this part of the FL1800 ESM/ECM (that was added later) or just regular communication antennas?
Thank you! :)

At IDEF 2015 WASS Showcased the Black Scorpion and Black Arrow torpedoes
2RTcVBx.jpg

Italian company WASS (member of Finmeccanica) was showcasing two of its latest toperdo systems during IDEF 2015 (the International Defence Industry Fair currently held in Istanbul, Turkey). The Black Scorpion mini torpedo designed to support the contact classification process and the Black Arrow new generation lightweight torpedo.

Talking to Navy Recognition during IDEF 2015, a WASS representative explained that the Black Scorpion was designed to be launched from sonobuoy tubes found on board ASW helicopters and Maritime Patrol Aircraft. The mini torpedo is intended to be used when the submarine contact is not accurate. The Black Scorpion "pings" in the water which either locates the target or forces the target to move. Black Scorpion retains the abillity to hit the target and induce damage with its small warhead.

[...]

Also on display on WASS stand during IDEF 2015 was the Black Arrow torpedo. The WASS representative explained that this new generation lightweight torpedo is an evolution of the MU90 and A244 and its main strength is its reduced life cycle cost.
