But isn't 004 nuclear powered?
Yeah it is, I think the rumors were that part of that building, including the part with the funnel, is office space that would be too much of a hassle to move or something, so it's not a perfect representation of 004. So the funnel shouldn't be taken as a guarantee that this configuration is for a non-nuclear carrier. Of course this is only a rumor so take it with a grain of salt.

Or they might simply be curious to know the advantages/disadvantages comparison to an alternative setup, without necessary planning to build any ship irrespective of findings at the present.

I suspect that Fujian will become primarily a training/long term reserve carrier within the next decade. It has a deck, island and layout very similar to what the nuclear carriers will have, so its ideal for pilot, aircrew and regular crew training. And because its conventional, it can be stored for a long time but readied relatively quickly if needed.

Within the next decade?

That is unlikely given the PLAN's long term requirement for CATOBAR carriers and carriers in general will likely not be met by what they can realistically end up producing and commissioning by 2036.

Within three decades? Sure.
