The 2nd Chinese aircraft carrier, a STOBAR similar to 16 Liaoning but improved version, began last Sunday a new trip to the sea yesterday in the north of China.

Early in the morning, the 60,000-ton ship, escorted by several port tugs, left the Dalian shipyard's Xiang Lu Jiao dock (香炉礁) before setting off alone to an area now banned. access located at least 100 km southeast of the Chinese port city.

(辽 航 警 0169) issued last week by the Chinese Maritime Safety Administration, an area of 3,274 km² is closed to all navigation from 25 August 18:00 to 7 September 08:00 local time due to "Military mission".

Henri K.
I do not believe she will be commissioned this year.

They took a year to ommission CV-16 after ten trials.

They will probably commission this one faster...but I believe that will be Spring or Summer 2019.

We shall see...time will tell.

I think they will have more trils, at least one or more with actual aircraft aboard before they do.

No escorts?

it's just sea trials, not an exercise.

i remember we had a satellite pic of Liaoning when it was in sea trials as well that was similar to this.

of course i wouldn't be surprised if there were naval ships further in the distance keeping overwatch.

Still confused about the trail coming off the bow section

Total give away even worse that what the aft is doing something must be dragging there surely not normal What is causing that

Bulbous bow can do this.
The ship may not be fully loaded yet.
If you look at the pictures of sailing away, you can see the front is way more up then the aft.
It can also be drag from a stream.

It is the shape of the hull. Same hull shape as Laoning. The bulb is not large enough to draw the bow wave down and break it up.

The whole point of a bow bulb, besides sonar, is to break up the bow wave, which causes the most resistance of all the hull waves. The bow bulb must be large and long enough to pull down the bow water and break up the wave, regardless of how the ship is loaded.

I didn't want to go off topic but CV-17 Shandong's bow wave has to be explained. It is a great vessel and with each new carrier, especially Chinese designed hulls, we can expect vast improvement in the hull shape.

CV-17 Shandong has a hull that is the product of the Soviet system. The irony is one of the primary inventors of the bulbous bow was a Russian who refused to design under the Soviet system, he left..

Vladimir Yurkevich, a Russian marine architect, was one of the inventors of the bulbous bow, with his SS Normandie. But he left Russia after the Bolsheviks took over.

All of China's newly designed hulls are fine. It is very exciting to see CV-17 Shandong at sea. She is a fine aircraft carrier.
