We know for sure, the 1th carrier = Liaoning = 16 = Type 001
The new one in Dalian, which is the 2nd carrier, is a Derivat of Type 001, so we call it Type 001 A.
I wouldn't change bevor official confirms the new calling.

Wait... what type "002"? isn't it type 001A?
There has never been mentioning of 001A by the Chinese officials. Only forums like this for some reasons (fans’ own logic) keeping calling it 001A. One the other hand, Chinese officials have confirmed several time with the designation of 002 in the past 12 months or so...

No!

What we know is the first Chinese aircraft carrier is pennant number 16. Nothing more!

Truth.

We don't know the official designation of the new carrier, only that '002' is somehow related. We don't even know if she's Type 002, or was simply built as 'Project 002'. Calling her the Type 001A is just a label that some people use to refer to a particular vessel.

Similarly, we don't know if she will receive pennant number '17', or '1', or anything in between. It is even more incorrect to call her CV-17 because not only is '17' pure speculation, the Chinese Navy does not use the CV hull classification either.

All this talk about what she is or isn't, is pure speculation, but what we know for sure is that the thread title 'Type 001A (CV-17 Shandong)' has the highest assumption-to-word ratio I've ever seen. She might not be Type 001A, she might not be '17', she will never be 'CV-17', and she might not even be 'Shandong'!

Really, let's just call her 'that new STOBAR carrier' and be done with it.

002 designation has been officially confirmed serval time. What more do you want? How official do you want? And how’s your fan’s logic better than Chinese’s official designation? Again I respect and understand your logic. But why are you keeping ignoring the fact?

That’s why we should simply call it 002, nothing more or less! Coz this is the only confirm designation. Whereas 001A or 17 or indeed Shandong have never been confirmed.

'cause the officially confirmed 002 designation didn't difference between Project (Ship, Carrier) 002 (002号) or Type 002 (002型).
So this could mean both or only one of them.

Project, type or ship means the same thing. There is still no class of aircraft carriers, all are customizations.
