We don't know that. We only know 002 is associated with this carrier but don't know if it's a 002型 or 002号.
Well, if it’s 002号,then the English translation would be CV-002 which is clearly wrong, as it’s likely to be named CV-17 follows the logic of the first carrier CV-16 On the other hand, if it’s 002型, then the correct translation should be Type-002 which is exactly I’ve been saying here... Plus, It was officially designated 002型 (Type-002) last year. I don’t understand why there’s still confusion over this issue.

"17" would be the second training carrier.
I expect an other hull number. May be "1", because with its double bridge it is the first fleet carrier.
CV-16 Liaoning is not a training carrier.

It is a seed carrier, whose initial role in the Navy will predominantly be to train pilots and crew but as more carriers enter service over time the role of training new pilots and crew will be dispersed among the various different carriers as they cycle through maintenance/refit and operation, and CV-16 will become merely one carrier among many.

To suggest it is a "training carrier" implies that its only role for the entirety of its service will be for training.

Maybe you are confused since your own source you refer still uses the old designation and my images are no low-quality gifs. :p:D

Sorry, ... couldn't resist.;)

RE you REF: 2317 and other incoherent arguments!

I am not confused at all, since when Type 001A (CV-17 Shandong) was referrd to as 002. Your source??? YOU ARE totally & utterly WRONG to put 002 on this site... even in the grave you still argue if you could .... This site is NOT for 002!! Everyone use this site as Type 001A (CV-17Shangdong) including the highly respected Jeff Head. ADMIT IT Deino! Why did Jeff Head' put China first constructed Carrier 'Shandong' on Type 001(CV-17 Shandong today!!)?
You are unbelievable arrogant and ignorant!

Simmer down, mang. He was just joking with you. I totally agree with the people who already posted. The title of this thread should have been changed to Type 002/CV-17 Shandong a long time ago.

Wrong.

CV-002 would be 002舰, not 002号.

Additionally, neither the shipyard nor PLAN has revealed what its Type designation is. The only confirmation we have is "002" is somehow associated with the carrier. We don't know if they're referring to Project 002 (002号) or Type 002 (002型).

Calm down man, grow up and do your homework instead of nit-picking on issues you most likely do not understand.

Point is - as @jobjed explained - we have indeed several confirmations on anything related to "002" with the new carrier. Indeed we still don't know if they're referring to Project 002 (002号) or Type 002 (002型) BUT - and that's my point - we have NOTHING that there is a Type 001A designation. So much to your point "Everyone use this site as Type 001 (CV-17Shangdong)". By the way You should have added an A, since the new carrier is never the Type 001; so much on writing correct stuff and using correct designations.

If you would go and look around at other sites beyond SINA, most of them already refer to the second carrier currently being outfitted at Dalian as the Type 002 and no longer as the Type 001A. (just look here for example:
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!
, the highly respected Xinhui from the China-Defense-Site refers to it as the "002 Aircraft Carrier (CV17 Shandong")
So Type 002 might indeed be wrong - so much to your request to "admit" and your accusation; I am arrogant and ignorant - but at least IMO more correct than Type 001A. Maybe we should call it Type 001 Project 002 at best until we get a truly official confirmation.

Concerning the "highly respected Jeff Head" and "Why did @Jeff Head" put China first constructed Carrier 'Shandong' on Type 001(CV-17 Shandong today!!)?" I don't know; most likely since it was used to be that designation?! I know we had the same discussion already some time ago and he asked me to change the designation back again to the IMO wrong name "Type 001A (CV-17 Shandong today!!)" until we get an official confirmation and I agreed BUT - and that's something you and also Jeff must admit - if you complain the unconfirmed Type 002 designation, you must even more complain with the CV-17 and Shandong number and name since this is even more a rumour and unconfirmed.

So in order to make you happy: I admit that I don't know the official designation and I admit that I might be wrong BUT I also admit that the truth and facts behind this issue and several others on Chinese military issues are a bit more complicate than such simple sites like SINA suggest and while I try to get the facts right - what includes making mistakes - you seem to be lucky like a baby-dog having found a bone to point to "my errors and mistakes" while you for yourself still pretend to post low-level gifs from fan-sites and don't get the background of such issues correct?!??

Anyway, everyone makes his contribution depending to his own abilities...

We will get an official name and we will see the hull number - then we decide.

The 2nd carrier is build from an other kind of steel, has an other live cicle and has an other task than the 1st carrier. So a new type designation is possible - with a hull number we do not expect.
