I suspect Shangdong’s deck operation philosophy is different. Note the LiaoNing’s deck is marked with precise deck parking spots around deck edges, similar to what the Russians put on Kuznetsov’s deck. Shangdong‘s deck is free of such markings. I suspect Liaoning and Kuznetsov are currently restricted by doctrine in terms how aircraft is staged on deck and what sort of mixture of deck operation can readily be conducted at the same time. Their small airwing may make that sufficient.

Shangdong might be developing and trialing more flexible deck operation philosophy and procedures possible and necessary for a substantially larger air wing. it might be Shangdong is being used to develop and verify deck procedures for the first CATOBAR Chinese carrier.

Shandong only has no marked parking positions on the forecastle. Around the island and in other places, the parking positions are precisely marked in the same way as on Lioanings flightdeck.

"... Japan’s Defence Ministry said on Sunday (04 APR 2021) that the Liaoning, accompanied by five escort ships, had transited through the Miyako Strait on their way to the Pacific Ocean [...] China’s widely-read Global Times newspaper, published by the ruling Communist Party’s official People’s Daily, noted the Nanchang, the first of a powerful new fleet of Type 055 destroyers that entered service last year, was part of the carrier group. 'The combination of aircraft carriers and Type 055 large destroyers will become a standard configuration of Chinese aircraft carrier task groups in the future,' it added."

Well I see 6 J-15s on deck and if the latest image I know showing the Shandong indeed recent showing 12 J-15s (maybe even more), then there are at least 18 J-15s out at sea at the moment on two carriers. Or am I wrong?

China always takes very cautious step, more so in the carrier aircarft. I think it is fair to say, Shangdong is to develop various deck procedures for flat-top electromagnetic - assisted take offs.
