@jobjed

Or a 055 DDG that makes it look tiny in comparison.

Although I suspect they did not intercept the US ship with a DDG because a DDG is deadliest at range and the ship could have received more important data if a DDG intercepted rather than an ancient LST which is like a glorified cargo ship and provides no useful data up close at all.

Turns out the SOB was trying to sniff PLAN electronic emissions while they were testing intra-battle group electronic coordination. I'd have liked it if China had CCG 2901 or 3901 at their disposal back then. Instead of a 3000t LST, it would've been a 12,000t cutter muscling the Tico out of the way.

That was USS Cowpens(CG 63) ..Ahem...Ticonderoga class cruisers have an ECM array that can dazzle any ship. Any ship. Period. I'll leave it at that.

Uh the PLAN DDGs use AESA radars with high t/r module counts, in addition to whatever ECM the ship itself has. It should be almost impossible to jam it.

If it has some way to bypass the defenses and touch a 052D, the 052D can most likely touch it back in the same way since physics work the same regardless of ship.

A single cruiser goes up against the 2 Chinese destroyers, each of which has their own phased array radars.

Somehow I doubt that the Cowpens would have come off better in an ECM dazzling competition.

And remember that the Cowpens at the time was a very troubled ship. The Commanding Officer was relieved of command in 2010, then the next one in 2012 and then the following one in 2014.

Does not matter that the CO was in hot water. the ship was at sea functioning as it should. Really.

A Tico can............never mind. And it does not matter what I post. Because you guys won't believe me anyway.

Have a blessed day.

Have you been keeping a track of what happened with the Cowpens? Apparently it was a dysfunctional ship.

And I believe a Tico can do a lot of things with the radars.

But what I'm saying is that Chinese destroyers are capable of doing the same thing because they have a similar radar setup.

So how is a single Tico supposed to face off against 2 Chinese destroyers, and come off better in that exchange?

EDIT. The Tico is 30 years old now and only has 5MW of electricity generation. Modern Chinese destroyers likely have far more electricity available than a Tico for a ECM competition. The latest Burkes have 12MW available for comparison.

On the front page of the Chinese Army Journal today, more and more Chinese naval airmen are qualified at night, the "owls" in the jargon of the Navy. But who is the "Grand Duke" among the Chinese?
