The sole Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov is in the docks for a multi year refit. But their pilots need to keep up their skills. This article floats the idea that the Russian pilots and crew maybe are allowed to train on the Liaoning. What do you guys think the chances of that are ?

Nyet! not a "snowballs chance in hell",, the Russian's won't ask, because they know what the answer would be! theres "NO WAY" the Chinese would allow the Russian's on their boat, the Russian's Mig 29Ks might fit in, but the Russian's have a whole different philosophy, and it is in no way aligned with Chinese methodology or practices.

an interesting thought, but far removed from the facts of life, I'm not minimizing their collective interests or ideology, but the Chinese are "by the book", and the Russian's couldn't care less about the "book"??? just two different philosophy's.

That's pretty hard to swallow if you're Russian that you have to borrow your neighbours carrier in order to continue your military operations. I think Russians are too prideful as a nation to do that sort of thing. The old guard may rather bench the pilots than let them fly. It will save money and they can use simulators in the meantime?

anyhow this stuff is really off topic.

@asif iqbal @Deino @bd popeye @Obi Wan Russell @siegecrossbow @T-U-P @Bltizo Do any of you know where, or has anyone kept an overall running list of Liaoning's deployments and cruises?

Particularly I'd like to know the longest one she has taken since she was put into PLAN service?

She hasn't been on Dalian for a while since 001A occupied the dock.

China MSA often announces reserved areas on the sea for drills and exercises. Much of these are close to the coast and within the East and North China Seas.

Since deployment means not in training, much of Liaoning's activities are for training J-15 crews, and that's her raison d'etre.

She doesn't have much to go anywhere in Asia before the Asiapac and the Western press all goes China threat in their headlines when she does.

She has gone past the Miyako Straits with a full battle group and into the Philippine Seas, and drilled and exercised there, which involves refueling mid sea, then either head straight back up the Miyako Straits or head around to the south of Taiwan to the South China Seas for exercises there, Hong Kong visit or in the last recent case, the huge naval parade near Hainan. After that, after a short visit to the Sanya base, head straight up through the Taiwan Straits, back to the Bohai or North China Seas.

That may be: the Chinese are dissatisfied with the decking of the Liaoning. Therefore, Liaoning gets a new surface and the 2nd Chinese aircraft carrier has to wait with the completion of its deck until the new surface on the Liaoning has proven itself?

... or, after years in flight ops Liaoning is just getting its deck redone?

I'm not sure why you'd think of linking Liaoning's maintenance with 002's own fitting out/sea trial process in absence of any other information.
