, police sources said Wednesday.
The 26-year-old victim was on the Atlantic Avenue 2/3 platform in Downtown Brooklyn at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday when Nicholas Theodore, 19, allegedly spat in his face, police and sources said.

When the victim asked Theodore why he spat on him, he yelled, “You f–king Chinese spreading the coronavirus!,” according to sources.
Theodore then unzipped his jacket and motioned that he had a weapon, saying, “You wanna do this?,” police said.

The victim fled and flagged down two cops, who were able to arrest Theodore, police said.
This is the latest in a wave of suspected hate crimes amid the spread of the coronavirus.

Theodore was charged with aggravated harassment as a hate crime and menacing and was issued a desk appearance ticket.

Over the course of the course of the outbreak, the narrative surrounding Covid-19 has changed from “China did great in containing the virus” to “China covered up the virus for weeks, CCP must be held accountable”. Many have started to parrot the Chinese “cover up” blindly without looking into the claims.
The “cover up” is largely a false narrative that was initially propagated by various news outlets, like the New York Times and the Guardian.

On March 21,

I'm sorry you have been asked to "keep your distance", I myself, was asked to do the same this afternoon, by a clerk in a store I was visiting, in a rather "brusque" manner, and she was of a different race... it was un-pleasant and embarrassing, it could have been racial? I also paid with a check, and it was clear she didn't really like that, but honestly, I think she is afraid, as are many people? the people wearing masks, the people are being told to maintain 6' separation from everyone, so people really are freaked out...

The President has made a very forceful statement reminding people that Asians and Asian Americans are not to blame, and recognizing the Asian American community as valued citizens...

I realize none of that makes you feel any better.... we need to all stick together

Still you can't deny that all the demonization of everything China by this administration will have an impact on how some people view Asians in this country. It don't make any difference if we are Japanese or Vietnamese. Impulses barely contained by previous administrations had been allowed to surface when people needed someone to blame. I guess under the thin veneer we are not that different compared to a couple hundred years ago.
