The U.S. and West have a lot more of these brutish toys, and China might get old (thanks to the one child policy) before it ever has a chance to catch up (with the U.S particularly). Falun Gong, Tibetans, Uighurs, (you name them), etc. receive moral and material support from the West. Then there is Taiwan and Hong Kong. The CCP is facing a coalition of rivals united by ideological framework/discourse of liberal democracy. Despite the facts that the Western and Chinese dissident media could be spreading exaggerated news about the coronavirus to discredit the CCP, their words carry great punches because of the material and ideological power behind them. In other words, it is about the CCP's weakness in its ideology and influence (soft power included), and the coronavirus crisis has only review how ineffective the CCP is in competing for global public opinion influence and discourse.
I think you simply join the echo chamber regards of influence, CCP power and so on.

China has 1.3 billion residents, more than the USA+ Europe (from Ireland to Russia ) together .

It matters more the internal Chinese view about china and the world , than the others view about china.

And simply due to the sheer size of population, China can simply outspend and outmanufacture the USA and everyone else if wish, and if there is the support from the population - and the government of China enjoy the support of people at the level or more than the USA Government its own constituency.

This virus will be a challenge, but not the biggest that the Chinese faced in the past 120 years, since Dowager Cixi .

Let get back to the topic.

One of the mistakes of China CDC in the beginning is not setting up temporary hospitals to quarantine suspected cases or mild patients. Allowing them to stay at home ended up infected their family and neighbors. I am surprised that Japan is making the same mistake and allowing more people infected with the virus. A cruise ship is just not a ideal place to quarantine people.

has announced its first death from the coronavirus outbreak, hours after confirming 44 more cases on a cruise ship quarantined near Tokyo, as fears of the spreading disease mount in the country.

The health minister, Katsunobu Kato, said the first fatality was a woman in her 80s who had been in hospital since 1 February, when she was diagnosed with pneumonia.

Her confirmed diagnosis came after her death, he said. The woman, a resident of Kanagawa prefecture near Tokyo, was the mother-in-law of a taxi driver who also became a newly confirmed case, Japanese media reported. Health ministry officials declined to officially confirm a relationship at the request of the family.

Authorities also confirmed two more cases: a doctor in his 50s who works at a hospital in western Japan and a man in his 20s who lives in Chiba, near Tokyo. None had a record of travelling abroad in recent weeks or contacts with Chinese nationals – a possible sign that the virus is spreading inside the country.

Earlier in the day, Kato said there were 44 more cases on the

, which is still carrying nearly 3,500 passengers and crew members. The cruise ship now has 218 people infected with the virus aboard out of 713 tested since it entered the port of Yokohama on 3 February, the largest cluster of infections outside China.

There was better news, however, for passengers aboard the

by several other ports in Asia because of fear of the virus.

Cambodian authorities were carrying out health checks before allowing passengers to leave the ship. Disembarkation is due on Friday.

“We’ve had so many near moments we thought we were going home only to be turned away,” Angela Jones, a US tourist on board, told Reuters. “This morning, just seeing land was such a breathtaking moment.”

No cases of the virus have been detected on the ship, but about 20 passengers have reported stomachaches or fever, Cambodian health officials said. The ship’s health staff considered them to be normal illnesses, but the affected passengers were being isolated from others, a health ministry spokeswoman said.

’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, praised the Cambodian government’s decision. “This is an example of international solidarity we have been consistently calling for,” Tedros said. “Outbreaks can bring out the best and the worst in people.”

Japanese authorities, meanwhile, said they would allow some older passengers to leave the Diamond Princess to spend the remainder of their 14-day quarantine in government-designated accommodation.

“If they test negative, those who wish to disembark can go and live in a lodging facility that the government will prepare,” Kato said. We will make every effort to ensure the safety and peace of mind of the people.”

Priority is being given to passengers aged 80 or older who are staying in a cabin without a balcony, and those in a similar age range with chronic health conditions.

About 80% of the ship’s passengers are aged 60 or over, with 215 in their 80s and 11 in their 90s, according to Japanese media.

The Diamond Princess’s passengers and crew were originally to be quarantined on board until 19 February.

The ship – home to the single largest cluster of infected people outside China – has been moored off Yokohama, near Tokyo, since 3 February after it emerged that a former passenger who disembarked in Hong Kong last month had tested positive for the virus.

i dont think pop # going matter much unless the education/skill set/productivity is high. India for example have alot population and likely become #1 population in the future, but in term of overall skill set its lagging behind china. Its same for China when compare to US. the most talented/educated people from all over the world constantly migrate to US, which make US #1 in term of tech/economy/military/global influence/higher education etc. Maybe in few decades china will catch up, but no one knows. there are alot issues ccp need to solve, taiwan, transition from manufacture to consumer/service economy etc etc.

Insofar the virus has thankfully been prevented from spreading globally thanks to quarantine measures placed by countries worldwide. Even for countries in which tourism plays a huge part in their economy aren't taking any chances.
So if your passport says China then be prepared to wait it out for two weeks in a hotel room.

Latest reports regarding the death toll is 1,370. With a total 60,000 confirmed infected we can expect that toll to rise even higher.

You mean thanks to China's quarantine efforts. Many nations have stopped direct flights from China. That's not quarantine. Only Vietnam and Japan have conducted what can be described as quarantine on a small scale due to high numbers of infections. Stopping flights does not equal quarantine. China itself requested citizens to stop going overseas and refunded many tickets. My personal family included - refunded holiday tickets. This isn't even including cities quarantined by government. Lol other countries prevented the spread. What about locking down cities and the draconian quarantine efforts taken by CCP.

Preventing the flow of people to and fro an infected area is a form of quarantine. And do you know how much foreign airliners also suffered in losses when they stopped flights to China on their government's orders ?
It's ironic that you describe CCP's quarantine efforts and city lockdowns as "draconian" but necessary, and at the same time pooh pooh equally extreme methods taken by other nations.
