India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote this week to Xi Jinping, offering the Chinese leader help in tackling the Wuhan coronavirus. Details of the assistance aren’t public, but Mr. Modi’s offer probably didn’t include supplies for a “treatment” that a senior Hindu fundamentalist advocated recently.

Swami Chakrapani Maharaj, president of the Hindu Mahasabha—a century-old organization that advocates Hindutva (or “Hinduness”)—declared that “consuming cow urine and cow dung will stop the effect of infectious coronavirus.” The swami added that a “person who chants ‘om namah shivay’ and applies cow dung” on his body “will be saved.” The Sanskrit chant is a salutation to Shiva, a Hindu deity.

WE ALL ARE SAVED!!

HOORAY!!

What's the point of poking fun at an extremist who isn't associated with Modi's offer? Modi offering support should be to his credit. BTW similar sorts of idiocy and mysticism exist in China as well. Thankfully these sorts of morons are in the minority in both China and India.

To better illustrate data as the result of definition change that's done today, this is the graph that used the old categorization for today (with the assumption that today's confirmed data using the old definition is increasing at the same decreasing rate as the previous ~5 days). You can see that almost all of the spike (grey) in the confirmed data is basically taken from the numbers of the suspected ones.

U.S. Northern Command is executing plans to prepare for a potential pandemic of the novel coronavirus, now called COVID19, according to Navy and Marine Corps service-wide messages issued this week.

An executive order issued by the Joint Staff and approved by Defense Secretary Mark Esper this month directed Northern Command and geographic combatant commanders to initiate pandemic plans, which include ordering commanders to prepare for widespread outbreaks and confining service members with a history of travel to China.

The Navy and Marine Corps messages, issued Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, reference an executive order directing U.S. Northern Command to implement the Department of Defense Global Campaign plan for Pandemic Influenza and Infectious Diseases 3551-13.

The document serves as the Pentagon’s blueprint for planning and preparing for widespread dispersion of influenza and previously unknown diseases.

BEIJING (AP) — China on Thursday reported 254 new deaths and a spike in virus cases of 15,152, after the hardest-hit province of Hubei applied a new classification system that broadens the scope of diagnoses for the outbreak, which has spread to more than 20 countries.

Japan also reported its first death, a woman in her 80s who had been hospitalized since early February. Two other places outside mainland China — Hong Kong and the Philippines — have previously confirmed one death each.

The new diagnostic approach came on the same day that Hubei and its stricken capital, Wuhan, replaced their top officials in an apparent response to public criticism of local authorities' handling of the epidemic.

The total deaths in mainland China since the outbreak began in December stood at 1,367, with the total number of confirmed cases mounting to 52,526. This figure now includes more than 13,000 cases of “clinical diagnosis” in Hubei, which appears to include those based on a doctors' analysis combined with lung imaging, as opposed to waiting for laboratory test results.

The first COVID-19 case in Beijing: the Beijing health authority first identified a highly suspected case of COVID-19 on Jan 12. The patient came to a local district hospital in an outskirt of Beijing for fever. By that time Beijing health authority had already established a procedure for identifying suspected COVID-19 cases and the patient was identified as such by the hospital. The hospital immediately notified the municipal health authority who then convened a panel of specialists for a diagnosis and designated three hospitals for treatment and quarantine of COVID-19 patients. The patient was transferred to one of the designated hospitals and the Beijing health authority notified the national health authorities. Hospitals and health authority in Beijing had no power to confirm COVID-19 cases, the power belonged to the National Health Commission. It wasn't until late night on Jan 19 (the day before Zhong Nanshan publicly announced human to human transmission) the National Health Commission confirmed the case, Beijing health authority notified the public via social media at around 3am on Jan 20. The patient had exposure to Wuhan but not to the seafood market.

Glad to know the health system in Beijing were very efficient.
