Back in ‘03, people returning from Beijing were quarantined on the spot. They were given a tent and sent food.

Man seeing China's situation definitely gives world leaders new ideas about the future of conflict. This is like the next best thing to direct warfare.

They should ban people from eating and selling bushmeats etc.

The finding suggests more outbreaks may be in store in West Africa, Munster says. It “should be an urgent call for strengthening the general health care infrastructure” in the region he says, including investing in training health care workers and African scientists. The finding should also reinforce public health messages to avoid direct contact with bats and not to hunt, eat, or kill them, Epstein says. “The good news is, [the greater long-fingered bat] is not a species typically found in human dwellings,” he says.

The Huanan Seafood market in Wuhan in China is under investigation with officials believing the coronavirus originated from a wild animal that was sold at the venue.

So far the highly-contagious virus has killed 17 people and infected hundreds around Asia.

According to the South China Morning Post, the market's advertising board had live foxes, crocodiles, wolf puppies, salamanders, snakes, rats, peacocks, porcupines and koalas.

The virulence itself is not necessarily 10 times worse if you take into account the number of trips Chinese make currently compared to almost 20 years ago - now China's transportation infrastructure is probably 20 times better and people are making 20 times more trips in the same time period. If the virulence is not much worse, I guess the epidemic will be contained once traveling is successfully restricted.

The media always have a field day with viruses or epidemics, and some news outlets are worse than others when it comes to misleading clickbait titles in general. News au unfortunately falls into that camp, and are little better than Daily Mail in that regard.

The quote from guan yi is that the potential of the actual number of infected individuals could be 10 times greater than sars. But the degree of virulence and the % fatality of it has yet to be determined.

At present, this novel coronavirus is still being investigated for its R0 and virulence, and they're still tracking the prognosis of the disease and who may be more susceptible to it. Based on the deaths so far, it is unsurprisingly the more elderly and comorbid who are suffering greater mortality but that is to be expected for any viral respiratory infection.

What is to be monitored is the degree of H2H transmission and to track any mutations of the virus, and to reduce R0 with control measures.

Death toll now at 25 with 830 people infected. From what I've heard some positively i.d.ed patients haven't even visited Wuhan.

One problem with this particular virus is that it has a relatively long incubation period where symptoms may not be apparent initially. One of the confirmed case reported in HK is that the person dropped by a hospital with initial medical issues but was sent home after negative test results. That person dropped back in two days later and further test showed positive results.

The big picture problem will be when the infection numbers cross a threshold beyond the existing medical infrastructure's ability to cope. Social media is already reporting long queues at hospitals.
