Be careful about that assumption. Clinton was a democrat, and she's a China hawk. She was the one who designed the Pivot to Asia with a bunch of China Hawks in the military. Trump ruined the Pivot to Asia by leaving the TPP, but it looks like the China hawks managed to take control anyway. If Biden wins, it remains to be seen if he can remove these guys from power.

Your right, whichever party wins there is a bipartisan agreement on China, remember the US establishment is stack with people from the military-industrial complex. Its money gravy train for them to have this coming cold war 2 with China, especially if supposed allies is willing to foot the bill. There is a lobbyist who proudly said that they will outspend China and China will be the second USSR, well let see it America can do it again.Sorry for deviating from the thread.

The virus is pretty mild as far as viruses go. Hell, common cold and influenza infect and kill a lot more in the US than COVID-19 does. Reason why COVID-19 spread in the US for years without been noticed until the Chinese found out it's a new strain.

That is not accurate.

This winter in the USA, COVID-19 is going to infect and kill far more Americans than the common cold and flu.

Haven't seen this being posted here yet. I don't know what you guys think. But i think this may not be such a good idea. There needs to be more testing. And since China's cases are so low there is no need for this move.

China moves forward with COVID-19 vaccine, approving it for use in military

Early trial data suggests that vaccine is safe, but efficacy still unclear.

China has approved an experimental COVID-19 vaccine for use in its military after early clinical trial data suggested it was safe and spurred immune responses — but before larger trials that will test whether the vaccine can protect against SARS-CoV-2 infections.

This marks the first time any country has approved a candidate vaccine for military use. China’s Central Military Commission made the approval June 25, which will last for a year, according to a filing reported by Reuters.

The vaccine, developed by biotech company CanSino Biologics and the Chinese military, is a type of viral vector-based vaccine. That means researchers started with a viral vector, in this case a common strain of adenovirus (type-5), which typically causes mild upper respiratory infections. The researchers crippled the virus so that it doesn’t replicate in human cells and cause disease. Then, they engineered the virus to carry a signature feature of SARS-CoV-2 — the coronavirus’s infamous spike protein, which juts out from the viral particle and allows the virus to get a hold on human cells.

The idea is that, when the harmless vaccine virus is injected into the body, it will essentially present the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to the immune system, which can then develop anti-SARS-CoV-2 responses. Those include antibodies, which are Y-shaped proteins that surveil the body and detect previously encountered germ invaders by key features. Once a germ is detected, neutralizing antibodies can glom onto the germ and prevent it from sparking an infection.

In a Phase 1 safety trial involving 108 people, the vaccine — dubbed Ad5-nCoV — proved safe and was able to spur the production of neutralizing antibodies and other immune responses. However, the study, published in The Lancet, also detected a potential foil for the vaccine candidate: in people who had been infected with Ad5 in their past, the vaccine didn’t generate as strong of a response to SARS-CoV-2’s spike protein. This may be because their immune systems quickly recognized the adenovirus and focused their responses on the viral vector, rather than the nefarious spike.

CanSino said it had since completed a larger Phase 2 trial, looking at safety and efficacy, but has yet to release results, according to the South China Morning Post. The paper also noted that CanSino has reached an agreement with the Canadian government to conduct Phase 3 trials there. Those trials will look at efficacy and potential side effects in an even larger group of people.

In the meantime, CanSino declined to say if members of the Chinese military would be required to receive the experimental vaccine or if it would be optional, according to Reuters.

According to the latest tally by the World Health Organization, there are 17 COVID-19 vaccine candidates in clinical trials and 132 others in pre-clinical development. Many vaccines are being developed in China, but with the now-limited spread of the coronavirus there, researchers are working to conduct vaccine trials elsewhere, in areas still seeing heavy transmission.

The Brazilian president got Covid. Currently, there are many vaccines on stage II and III trials. The Chinese are giving them to people traveling abroad on an volunteer basis. It seems a no brainer for the heads of states to get this. I wonder why this is not happening.

Looks like the vaccine developers are being super careful about possible side effects, namely adverse immunological response. Some viral diseases such as dengue fever are known to cause unpredictable evolving responses from the body's immune system causing it to do harm to the body instead, like when during a second episode of infection from the same virus or same type of virus.

The good news is so far, with the millions of infections, COVID-19 is not known to have such a problem.

The virus only seems to be controllable only with the insane lockdown, social distancing and mask-wearing. Imagine what would happen if everything is business as usual and the people are allowed to mix around.

The China example is the counterpoint.

Lockdown so that the virus really is eliminated from the general population.
Then seal off the country so that reinfections are not possible.
That allows everyone inside to carry on as usual and mix around. Social distancing and mask-wearing is then optional.

But when there is an occasional outbreak, implement a quarantine of potential virus carriers and conduct mass testing.
Then after 2 weeks, the number of new cases goes back to zero.

USSR was foiled by coup. Without Yeltsin locking up Gorbachev at Yalta and proclaiming Russian independence USSR would not have dissolved. It blame it on crappy USSR intelligence. They didn't even see that one coming. China on the other hand is a very centralized country, not a loose federation like USSR was. On top of that, Chinese intel is second to none. What happened to USSR won't ever happen again to another country.

There won't be business as usual again. From now on people will wear mask when they go outside. Not only will it control spread of COVID, it also helps control the spread of common cold, runny nose, sneezing, influenza, and other air spreading viruses.

From now on people's habit will change. Wear mask when they leave home. Wash hand when they enter store.

As Vesicles pointed out earlier, such cleanliness is going to make us more susceptable to super bugs.

Well, all those people being hospitalized and admitted to the ICU disagree with you. Actually, the patients don't want to disagree with you. Honestly, if it were up to the patients themselves to decide, they would rather agree with you. Unfortunately, their bodies don't take their orders...

Many want to compare the COVID-19 with common cold and flu. I don't care about anyone citing the low fatality or any other statistics. The only number I am looking at now is hospitalization and ICU capacity. Never have we seen this kind of hospitalization and ICU occupancy during any of the previous flu seasons. No flu season in the past has pushed our ICU capacity to the limit and forced doctors to make the impossible decision of whom to save and whom to let go... And in a typical flu season, we are talking about ~50 million infected in the US alone, way higher than the current number of the Coronavirus-infected. Our health care system has been cruising along just fine, and never even been close to be stretched to the limit. With the COVID-19, with way less people infected than the common cold/flu, our health care system is now about to collapse. No matter how low the fatality is, we are about to lose our capacity to treat new patients. Patients are about to be told to go home and die on the streets and at their homes... COVID-19 is NOT the flu.

Reason why COVID-19 spread in the US for years without been noticed until the Chinese found out it's a new strain.

I don't think we have any evidence for this at all. We would not be in this whole mess if the Coronavirus has been spreading in the US for years. Given the crazy infectivity of the Coronavirus that we are seeing now, most of us would have gotten immunity against it and we should all be happily out and about by now, if the virus has been spreading in the US for years.
