Coronavirus 2019-2020 thread (no unsubstantiated rumours!)

Wait? Are people still following Trumpy amd comparing this to normal flu? UnFecking believable
Why? Because let’s be Fecking Blunt. It IS! Those who have had complications typically were those who would have had those from Influenza. This is not a Influenza but is a upper respiratory infection. The effects of which are basically SARS which is a hard hitting case of flu. Granted one with a long incubation but a hard flu. 80% recovery rate. This isn’t Bubonic plague. If your health system doesn’t break down and normal hygiene steps are taken then there shouldn’t be bodies burning in the street or mass graves.
the rest is political.

p.s.

i know i have been shunned off this thread for my "inappropriate" skepticism of this coronavirus panic, but heres some sources i heard since yesterday:

  1. Neil Degrass Tyson (with Dr. Redlener) said the fact that people are panicing more about coronavirus than the normal flu makes no sense, since the flu kills 100 people in the US everyday. He said its all cuz of media hype.
  2. Noam Chomsky said the problem is the failing US infrastructure, which is why other countries handled coronavirus without problems
  3. Scott Golloway said the same thing as Chomsky, and questioned why Norway had a 0.2% death rate while US had a much higher rate due to horrible infrastructure
  4. Elon Musk said coronavirus panic is "pretty dumb" (lolz)

anyways... now you can all resume panicing and hoarding toilet paper. Im out.

1. A dramatic drop can't be faked? A dramatic drop on its own needs more support than a decrease in line with normal distribution.
2. No one cares about China. First rule of Trump is to "blame someone else " , and he just follow that .

It is the end, most likely the Coronavirus will flush the value of the Chinese FX reserves - in a years time they will worth of a few toilet paper roll : D

You need to educate yourself on what are FX reserves.

The Chinese government FX reserves are mainly foreign government bonds denominated in USD, EUR, GBP and JPY.
So you say that these will only be worth a few rolls of toilet paper in a year's time.

That can only come about if those governments have defaulted on their government bonds.
Basically, you're saying that the US, EU, UK and Japan will completely collapse.
But why would they ever do that, given they can just print money to cover this?

If anything, the coming shock to asset prices offers an opportunity for the cash rich.
Government bonds could be sold for their full value and converted to cash.
Then those cash-rich buyers could buy cheap property and stocks, and hold them for the long-term.

I remember hearing about Blackrock funds buying large numbers of properties at US foreclosure auctions after 2009, because they were the only ones who had cash on hand.

My post was quoted twice in 24 hours. That was supposed to show my false bravado. Complete with one questioning if I was feeling as confident today as then.
hence my response. Farther more a good deal of the last few pages has been political BS, and the usual US doom and gloom.
No the epidemic is not about me, and it’s doing far more damage outside the US but that’s almost all we are reading here save for the occasional Italy. How is Iran? How is Venezuela? How is Brazil? How is Thailand? What about Poland? No everything seems Trump failed here or Xi InVictus.

I noticed that none of the people you quoted have any expertise in health sciences.

What "other countries" handled COVID 19 without problems? The situation in Norway is just beginning to unfold, it's way too early for their death rate to have any comparison value.

Dismissing COVID 19 as political is not going to make it any less dangerous.

I don’t know if I’m just scaring myself, but I suddenly started considering that things can go very bad. Looking at how the US is handling the situation with:

poor leadership
lack of tests
lack of mandatory quarantine
not wearing masks in public,

What if incompetent countries all over the globe cant control this and healthcare workers started dying en masse. Infected start dropping like flies at 10% mortality due to no healthcare system. Manufacturing breaks down. Chinese lynchings.

I’m starting to see the decision making from the CCP standpoint. They had to stop this thing. A simple order to close public gatherings and stay home might not be enough if the disease never goes away.

@shanlung @Gatekeeper i am now scared, only countries taking this seriously are those that speak Chinese or used to speak Chinese.

I think you are scaring yourself.
Remember the survival rate for under 50s is still really high, at over 99%.
And that 80% of the infected don't even realise it, because the symptoms are so mild.

So healthcare workers and the vast majority of the population/workforce will not be dying in large numbers.

Even without any medical treatment, I reckon the worse case is that only 2% of the population would die.
That is serious, but it is not going to cause a collapse in society.

Dismissing COVID 19 as political is not going to make it any less dangerous.
I am not dismissing the virus.
I am dismissing the reactions or over reaction in many cases. The actual spread is less than influenzas in the world. Although more lethal in theory it’s less spread. So by volume less deadly. The areas where it’s hitting hardest are suffering primarily due to preexisting socio-economic issues.

things brought up as supposed lack of leadership are more lack of actual need.
do people need to wear masks in public? Not really but some do. I was just in a Supermarket where 3 women were.
lack of mandatory Quarantine? Mass Quarantine is overkill.
Lack of Test? You only need a test if symptomatic and how many were actually available? Until recently in the last week only a few. Testing everyone would be a wasteand create more problems than solve.

The WHO has said very clearly that the only way to contain this outbreak is mass quarantine and extensive testing.

In the short months, we've seen COVID 19 go from completely unknown to global pandemic. So many people fail to grasp the significance of exponential growth.
