Between 8 million and 23 million Americans are still sick months or years after being infected. The perplexing array of symptoms known as long Covid has left an estimated 1 million of those people so disabled they are unable to work, and those numbers are likely to grow as the virus continues to evolve and spread. Some who escaped long Covid the first time are getting it after their second or third infection.
...
In one study, researchers at the University of Oxford compared brain scans of people before and after they got Covid and found that even mild cases can cause the brain to shrink by 0.2 to 2 percent more than in people who had not been infected.
...
The majority of long Covid patients — more than 75 percent, according to some estimates — were never hospitalized for their original infection.
But but but muh zero COVID totalitarian see see pee pee is sooooo evil, we demand freedom and rights for COVID

Looks like long COVID is more prevalent with those who got infected with previous variants like the Delta and alpha variants than with Omicron. Maybe has something to do how those variants infect people, Omicron is more likely to attack the upper respiratory system while previous variants tend to attack the lower respiratory system depraving the body of oxygen and causing havoc in the body.

I got Omicron even after being extra cautious and 4th time vaccinated with both inactivated and mrna vaccines. It really hit hard the upper respiratory system, the fever and the muscle pain was nothing compared how uncomfortable my throat and sinus felt, like having needles there. No wonder is so infectious, the vast majority of the viral load is in the upper respiratory system.

There are a lot of debates on the merit of Zero Covid Policy versus Living with the Virus. Each has their pros and cons.

But one thing I do know is that since the initial Wuhan shutdown, there were numerous variants emerging from throughout the world, mostly in high population developing economies. But not single Variant of Interest or Variant of Concern, as defined by WHO, has emerged from China. Does that tell you something ?

Meanwhile, 3 of the 5 BRICS countries (Brazil - Beta, India - Delta, and S Africa - Gamma/Omicron) have devastating variants originated from them.
Many of these developing countries, especially in India and Africa, still lack adequate vaccines and thus act as breeding grounds for new variants. Until this is fixed, future variants are guaranteed to emerge.

If you are trying to infer that China's Zero Covid policy has little to do with the fact that no major variant of interest or concern has emerged from China, here are some facts for you to ponder.

The Beta Variant was first detected in July 2020, Delta Variant first emerged in late 2020, and the Gamma Variant was first detected in Jan 2021. Date of detection means that the variants started mutation a coupe or more months earlier.

The first ever Covid-19 vaccine shot was given on Dec 14, 2020.

China has no vaccine during the time of emergence of all previous major variants prior to Omicron. So why no variant from China ? IMHO, China's Zero Covid policy save the world at least one wave of Covid infection.

You are reading too much into it. Wasn’t talking about China. But how the lack of vaccines in developing countries will continue to create hot zones for future variants. The slower the rate of vaccination the more likely it is for the virus to mutate across their populations.

And these new variants will invariably “travel” across the globe, create periodic outbreaks again and again.

The Unvaccinated are fueling mutations. And no country will be immune to it until we bump up vaccination rates, especially in poor developing countries. That’s all
