Looks like a smiling fact to me.

There is a reason why China is using so many Western companies. (Among others) Its because these companies are working on their specialised industry sub-fields for many decades and have created their own "world-class" management system for manufacturing, QA, engineering processes etc.

A company doesn't just create a new thing out of thin air. Necessary processes and procedures must be in place to create and engineer new products.

I am guessing that the Chinese suppliers can create working (but not world class) products, however their internal processes are not mature enough to ensure a 100% reliability.

I mean this is the commercial aircraft business. We are talking about millions of people flying safely. Even a slight reliability issue could be devastating for the industry.

So, it is good that China is developing their plane step by step. First use foreign supplier to get experience (processes, manufacturing, QA etc) and after 5-10 years start replacing them with the (now) domestic replacements

I don't think so. China was late in air transport. Until 3 decades ago there is hardly any air travel in China . So the civilian air transport industry just didn't get off the ground. I don't think QA or engineering process has anything to do with it. China has built complex machinery like steam turbine, compressor, nuclear power plant for years which require precision engineering, manufacturing and QA

China has been building high speed railway for decades with good record in accident Transporting million over long distance with safety and comfort. Now most of the components are built domestically. Starting with import, joint venture and domestic supplier. so it is step by step build up HSR industry.

But in civilian air transport she has to start from the scratch and facing steep learning curve. So they have to start somewhere. First concentrating on design of the plane itself in term of Aerodynamic, structure, control and manufacturing of fuselage, wing, rudder etc. And don't bother about component yet, get it from import, joint venture and slowly build domestic analogue . so she just replicating what she did with HSR

Part of the reason why uses Western parts is because of all the bitching and complaining the West was making in general over Chinese market share over trade. Now they're taunting how China needs their parts...? Is that like Australia claiming electricity shortages in China are due to China not buying their coal? When China's first announced plans for a domestic airliner, the West complained how they not making money off of it.

Airbus’ edge over Boeing in China under threat as Comac’s new C919 jet readies for take off

  • Both Airbus and Boeing assemble jets in China, largely political moves to help them capture a share of the huge domestic market
  • But with China’s C919 passenger jet set for certification later this year, they will have to get used to sharing the narrow-body plane market

A Boeing 737 Max has been sent to China for certification for resumption of flying operation in China. It was reported than US FAA personnel are also in China in regard to Boeing 737 Max's recertification for resume flights.

This raised speculation that recertification of Boeing 737 Max by China is related to C919's continuing procurement of US engines and avionic parts, or even FAA certification of the Chinese jet.

I say it many of times in here that China doesn't need outside markets to sell Chinese airliners. It doesn't need to be accepted nor does it have to pass their authorities to fly over their countries. China just needs the domestic market to buy it and they have no say over it. China is the largest market for new airliners in the world. China just has to buy it for domestic purposes and Boeing and Airbus will go bankrupt. That's why all the talk and panic in the West. If they're so assured it won't pass muster (which is irrelevant), then they have nothing to worry about or have to say anything. But they are saying something because they're in panic China won't be buying their airliners. Remember the FAA was corrupt and allowed the 737 Max 8 to take shortcuts and fly because Boeing had influence. They already failed being trustworthy so you think they would give Chinese airliners an honest evaluation? They'll fail Chinese airliners solely to eliminate the competition not because it's not air-worthy.
China eventually needs to sell the plane outside of domestic market if COMAC is to attain its goal. Initially, the domestic market might suffice for the domestic market, but expect future iterations to focus on international markets. establishing a secondary market that will allow airlines to renew their fleets is the next challenge for this model now.

AFAIK domestic market's demand for airplanes is gigantic. Even if COMAC fully focused on domestic demand it would need decades to produce the airplanes in numbers.

As such, COMAC has plenty of time to iterate on its design and then try to compete internationally with upgraded versions of its aircraft
