Speaking of which, has anyone played Clair Obscur: Expedition 33? China has no doubt made great strides in gaming, but after playing that game I just had a feeling of like, "Okay Black Myth and Genshin's cool and all, but China still has quite a ways to run if it wants to play with the big boys."

Yeah, the game is that good.

China is definitely still behind in AAA game development, but that is not surprising. China is 80% mobile players. The vast majority of game companies in China are mobile companies and barely have any experience with AAA PC & console development.

So China excels and is increasingly dominating “mobile AAA” games. But has a much harder time breaking through in PC & console. I don’t think much will change here until more people in China buy high end PCs and consoles, unfortunately.

Maybe developing "screen writing talent pools" would help, would benefit not just games, even movies/tv shows...

To give an idea how dominate China is in mobile games, in 2024 Chinese developed games were 40% of the top 100 top grossing games on App Store and Google Play. This is also excluding Chinese stores which are 2-3x higher grossing than China iOS App Store. In certain verticals like mobile SLG games, Chinese games make up 90% of market share.

In terms of market size, premium paid PC/console games are a $30B market in 2024, while mobile F2P games are 3x bigger at $92B.

Notably, a Chinese company also makes the top downloaded mobile game in 2024. According to HungryStudio, Block Blast has over 150M MAU, which is higher than Steam. It monetizes via ads, instead of IAP, so it does not appear on the Top Grossing list.

One of the reasons is that most Chinese people don't have the time and space for a console. You need a living room, a TV, and a good chunk of time. People who do have time gaming often choose PC/Laptop over console, so there are a lot of steam users in China. Most people just opt for mobile gaming.

Nah they just need to stop beating the dead horse of Chinese mythology for content. Expedition 33 was a self contained story which wasn't overly reliant on french culture.

There's plenty of modern Chinese life experience that can translate to a relatable medium for gamers to emphasise to, Chinese studios just need to take the leap.

You can say the same for RDR2 & GTA 6, or any of the Bioshock games, etc., etc. Give the new player some time to develop. We just made our first AAA game that succeeded. Eventually, we will reach that seat with the best of them. Just give it a few years.

On the other side, though, our animations have finally been popping off. To Be Hero X is currently doing extremely well both domestically and internationally. Currently, ratings are at the very top, surpassing all the top anime this year. Soon, Lord Of The Mysteries is going to come out as well, and that is looking to surpass To Be Hero X.

I've said this a couple of years ago. 2025 is going to be the year for China's entertainment industry, specifically animations/donghuas.

What exactly is good about it? I saw some trailers and didn't see anything attractive.

Are there any wargame fans around here? My interest in modern military hardware has been reinvigorated over the last few months and I'm looking for a game that can scratch that itch; especially ones where China is a major player. I have games like Red Dragon, People's General, and Command and Conquer: Generals, and I'm familiar with games like Sea Power and DCS. However most of these games are either set decades ago so it doesn't have any modern equiment, or they were made a long time ago so any modern equipment they depict is fanciful and may not have any relation to the real world stuff. Are there any great computer games out there that I should look into?

I'm also into old school board wargames, so I've started picking up the Next War series by GMT. Any recommendations in the same ilk would greatly appreciated!

Try Broken Arrow on Steam.

It's a modern to near-future wargame. Heads up, China isn't in the game, but there is a pretty high chance that it will be added after release. Modding is also included, so people will most likely make their own China faction even if the devs don't.
