How will Tsinghua pan out? In particular, will it continue to manufacture its memory chips?
Tsinghua will be okay as it is still a majority State Owned Entity.
It will likely be bailed out and restructured.
It will continue its manufacturing of memory chips as it is a Strategic Industry.
Its Chip Design subsidiary UNISOC wants to breakaway and be a standalone business.

I am assuming the first so I will requote from the article again

YMTC's own supply chain audit, for example, found that many vital processes were not immediately replaceable with domestic vendors: high-end lenses, precision bearings, quality vacuum chambers, and motors, radio frequency components and programmable chips all still come from foreign manufacturers in the U.S., Japan and Europe, people briefed on the matter told Nikkei.
All these items are made by foreign-owned IP (US, Japan, Europe) which are not "immediately replaceable with domestic vendors"

That is not entirely correct and outdated. China did make radio frequency chip, Programable logic chip, High lenses, Motor etc But maybe does not have the volume yet. Japanese Fanuc has high precision motor factory in China

I am not an engineer, but no way I am going to believe that list of items will hold YMTC back.

The high end lenses should be Germany, and probably bought off the shelf.

Ball bearings should be Germany, maybe Swiss?

Vacuum chambers, China probably can produce those, motors too.

Radio frequency components ain't high tech that is out of reach of China.

A field-programmable gate array, the programmable chip, should be a company like Xilinx, but those things only at 14nm or more like 28nm. Banned those from China, that is banning the entire access to China for those American chips. Also, those probably bought off the shelf too.


The logic chip, is just harder to make than the memory chip, which is YMTC business.

We have to expect that YMTC will be a peer competitor or maybe even better than the established companies like Samsung, Hylix, Micron in the near future.

YMTC has since last year built a Parallel Localised Production Line for its Chips.
Alot of the equipment from local vendors are fairly new and require testing and verification so it takes time naturally to get it up to speed.

YMTC is actually already facing an unofficial Embargo on Production Equipment by the US Govt.
So this has impacted production of its products.
The low yields of the 128 layer Nand is probably caused by using some new local equipment.
The local equipment takes time to mature.
However this yield problem should be solved by 2022 when they are planning to scale production massively of the 128 layer Nand.
2022 is also the time when they will tale delivery of the new SMEE DUVL and alot of other locally made equipment.
This is probably giving nightmares to the competitors of YMTC.

A good advise from this video
High-end chips using 5 nm technology or lower account for 5% of the market demand, but it demands billions of investment. China should not encourage hundreds of Chinese companies to invest in the niche repetitively. It is a trap China should avoid, instead.
