Yes, you are right. Huawei Hisilicon is now working on 3D Stacking Designs for 14nm and 7nm Kirin Chips. A very smart Lady is leading the design at Hisilicon.
The 14nm 3D Chips will have to go into mass production in late 2022 at the Huawei FAB in order for it to be ready for use in Huawei Mobiles to be released in 2023.
The King is Coming Back with Harmony OS.
This will shake up the Mobile Phone World.

@WTAN and Sir maybe with a heart of 7nm 3D chiplet powering its Mate 60 Pro in 2024, a generation behind TSMC 3nm. Can't wait to buy it as a replacement for my P30 Pro.

Who said right and wrong have anything to do with it? I find the prevailing opinion about this issue by the people who post far too often in this thread to be whiny and childish. America is China's enemy and seeks to harm it, why are the usual suspects here surprised and outraged when it imposes a tech embargo?

It's a very simple rule: might makes right. When China is strong enough to do the same (and worse) to America, I would be outraged if it didn't.

As for Russia, as I said I'm sympathetic and see a lot of utility in strengthening an ally - but China's interests must be respected and they come first.
You would be outraged if China doesn't bully America if or when it can? OUTRAGED? You would be. Not everyone has the same morality as you have.

As satisfying as that sounds, the business world comes down to trust and no one does business with a gun to their head. I am almost 100% sure that what the U.S. Politicians are doing is going to significantly impact the competitiveness of and market share of U.S. companies.
The Chinese have a monopoly on processed rare earths and if they want they can cause significant damage, the shortages can get much worse. But they are much smarter than your average American politician, they know that if they use it in a tiny dispute it will ultimately affect their companies, so they leave it as a weapon of last resort, like a nuclear bomb.
The best strategy used to stagnate the Chinese semiconductor industry has not been export controls alone, but has been to make Chinese companies addicted to equipment, software, and technology from the United States and foreign in general stalling local competition. That is why export controls are lowered each time their capacities increase. The Neocons have such a low IQ that they haven't even realized it yet. Even though he has been in front of them the whole time. Without that, it is true that they would not be making 7nm chips, but the ecosystem would be a lot stronger.

@tokenanalyst Bro so correct, the reason why China don't weaponized Rare Earth, the simple answer "why create a competitor out of nowhere". You monopolized the market thru efficiency and trust, why destroy it and hurt yourself. Having experience sanction the Chinese knew fully well the consequences cause they themselves learn to live with it, adapt , overcome and become stronger.

Would 3D stacked 14nm chips be sufficiently competitive with the leading edge processes of 2022-23, or would it merely allow them to provide a midrange option?

Because the way it is being described makes it sound like 3D stacking will be capable of competing with the leading edge processes of the era, which seems unlikely to me.


Additionally is there a reason why other companies cannot design and fabricate 3D stacked 5nm chips and downwards for the 2023 era and onwards?
I imagine 3D stacked 5nm would be significantly superior to 3D stacked 14nm.

14 nm - no.

It is not only a question of technology but economics and "politics". There aren't many fully integrated companies that can manufacture a semiconductor product from start to the end, e.g. NVIDIA, AMD, Qualcomm, Apple, etc. are fabless and only produce IC designs for foundries to manufacture. The current leaders are TSMC & Samsung (although the latter is still lagging behind TSMC in SOTA nodes), they invest a lot into further miniaturization R&D to retain their competitive edge and need to somehow recuperate these investments. Therefore, they have zero incentives to research stacking for general semis. However, if I am not mistaken, the approach itself is not exactly novel and memory manufacturers (including Samsung btw) use it extensively, so it is not some unproven technology.
