They wont be able to set us back that much. Lets be real, the US COULD set china back to the technology of America in 2015. I'm pretty sure if China got even close to the GDP per capita of America in 2015 it would have long been game over for that empire. Either way, I'm pretty sure the liberation movements in the US will offer a meaningful distraction to that goal.

There was already 14nm chips in 2015. If a total semiconductor embargo is imposed, we will be looking at 2005 or even earlier.

Depends on how you see it, Intel's new CPUs are still mostly 14nm. Good design can go a long way.

So basically China needs to secure 14nm at minimum by MIC2025z

I do think America is going to do a total embargo soon...

When it does come to that, pretty sure Tiawan will be reunited with mainland and TSMC will be owned by PRC/PLA

China's strategic oil reserves steady at 100+ days but it needs to be larger.

Late last year I upgraded from old 4790k to intel 9900k, mainly so that I can use more than 32gb ram ( my new system has 128gb) but in terms of games I saw maybe 3% framerate improvement from the 4790k chip back in 2014...

9900k is still 14nm

Which is pretty much why they started all this war on Huawei and SMIC. Intel got left behind because of bad management (indians).

I wonder if TSMC engineers will escape to the Intel/Arizona fab.

we'll see, so far Chinese gov't is pretty supportive of private tech sector, especially in the south.

but a strong tech sector requires a strong underlying economy as well, which i think needs more reform. A scientist's pay can go much further if everything is cheaper and yuan is stronger for example. (lower rent/mortgage/food/education prices/utilities)

Private tech sector is important but China needs better basic/applied research. China now spends 0.13% of its GDP on basic research, lower than even the Czech republic. Surely Chinese government can afford to spend like 0.2% and pays its researchers a bit better. Most of their salary will be spent inside the domestic economy anyway.

Well I think the best way to go about this whole thing in a sustainable manner is to have small private companies handle subcomponents.

Say 1 company provides the mask machining or 1 company produces the coatings for the mirrors.

SMIC's role should be like TSMC and Huawei should be like Apple.

Those smaller companies can also supply the world and each become $billion companies.

There is a point of deminishing returns to dumping more money to a problem but China isnt doing enough right now, this is make or break, this is more important than Manhattan and Apollo projects combined...

If folks on this forum can see it I know CPC sees this too... hope they are not so naive to think Biden means they get a respite, Biden will triple down, mark my words

CPC is also wise enough to know not to make a big deal about it, as they undoubtedly learnt after the MIC 2025 experience. They will have already set in motion plans to achieve complete self sufficiency in the semiconductor sector, but it would be impossible for anyone on the outside to determine what moves are actually being made.
