Chinese IC design house Montage plans to complete developing mass-produced version of MXC chip by 2023 year-end

China’s IC design house Montage Technology (澜起科技) plans to complete the development of the first generation of MXC and CKD chips for mass-production by the end of this year based on customer feedback, the company said during a recent session of the institutional investors’ Q&A.

Founded in 2004 and listed on the STAR market of the Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2019, Shanghai-based Montage Technology provides high-performance and low-power IC solutions for cloud computing and data center markets. It has two major product lines - interconnection chips and Jintide® server platform.

The company has steadily increased scientists and technicians since listing, with 641 employees at the end of 2022, of which 73% were R&D personnel, totaling 468. The increased R&D staff mainly focus on new products, including AI chips, PCIe Retimer chips, and MXC chips.

As for AI chips, Montage stated that the company had taped out the engineering sample of the first generation of AI chips at the end of 2022, and is currently conducting internal testing and verification work.

In terms of demand for PCIe5.0 Retimers, the company believes that its demand is promising in the medium and long term driven at the continuous doubling of the PCIe data transfer rate. However, the mainstream CPUs that support PCIe5.0 Retimer chips have not been on the market for long, and it will take time to build the PCIe5.0 ecosystem.

Montage is the second company in the world to mass-produce PCIe5.0/CXL2.0 Retimer chips. Its PCIe5.0 Retimer chip has low latency, which is important for high-speed signal chain transmission and CXL applications.

Montage operates in branch offices in Kunshan, Beijing, Xi'an, Macau, the US, and South Korea.

Jingsheng Electromechanical: Large silicon wafer equipment has been localized and delivered in batches, and the shipment of silicon carbide epitaxy equipment has reached the forefront in China

Jingsheng Electromechanical said in a recent survey by the organization that the company's semiconductor equipment business is divided into the following three areas: first, large silicon wafers, that is, 8-12 inch large silicon wafers; second, characteristic technology, that is, power semiconductor equipment; third , advanced manufacturing process, that is, wafer-side related equipment.

The company's 8-12 inch large silicon wafer equipment (crystal growth, slicing, polishing and CVD equipment, etc.) has basically been localized and delivered in batches; epitaxy equipment for power semiconductor equipment and high-temperature furnace tubes and other equipment have also been delivered in batches. Especially silicon carbide epitaxy equipment, the shipment volume has reached the forefront in China; in the field of advanced manufacturing process, the company is laying out equipment such as 12-inch thinning and epitaxy (atmospheric pressure epitaxy, decompression epitaxy).

With the rapid development of the photovoltaic industry and the semiconductor industry, silicon wafer manufacturers are accelerating production capacity expansion. Quartz crucibles are the core consumables in the production of silicon wafers, and the market demand is growing rapidly. Jingsheng Electromechanical seizes the development opportunities of the industry and actively promotes the development of quartz crucible business. Speed up the construction and commissioning of the Ningxia crucible production base. With the gradual release of expanded production capacity, the company's quartz crucible business has achieved rapid growth.

This is actually about SMECS, not SMIC.
It would be a problem if SMIC is getting 70% of their revenue from IGBTs and MEMS

There are plenty of hardworking Americans actually. But we actually work for higher salaries rather than whatever TSMC pays. This is not Taiwan where semiconductor industry pays like 4x everything else. So when people join TSMC, they know they have to work hard. In America, the best and hardest working are doing startup software companies, finance, lawyers or doctors. Nobody is going into chipmaking, because nobody grew up wanting to making chips. And most people willing to work those hours are in the northeast, not in Arizona.

Another case of Taiwanese management clueless about American culture.
Agree. Plus from what I have heard, Taiwanese companies are some of the worse when it comes to work culture and how they treat their employees to be honest, especially in developing countries in which they set up shop. Not sure how true that is, but looking at how Foxconn was running their factories in China, I assume its true.

I wonder if Chinese gov't will put a stop to this. SMIC has a lot of new 28 to 90nm capacity coming online and all using domestic tools. While TSMC has access to foreign tools. It seems unfair for TSMC and UMC to be allowed to increase 28nm capacity while using American tools.

I think they need to make a law that any foreign chipmaker in China looking to expand capacity must operate under the same sanction restrictions as domestic chipmakers

I think could be irrelevant, the localization semiconductor products is driven by the fear of US export controls, even if the item is made in China, is still subject to US controls if is made usuing US technology and more if the company is foreign. Is probably an desperate attempt to get them to sign the Chip Deal. An intersting thing would be if in order to avoid US controls foreign companies in China start using more local made tools and materials.

well, that's kind of my point. You need to put something in to encourage foreign fabs to use domestic tools. Otherwise, they have an unfair advantage for using American tools. Do you really want SMIC to be put at a disadvantage because it's doing the right thing of validating domestic tools?
