Now, at some point, Chinese gov't may want to put in explicit laws to restrict US equipment sales of mature nodes, but better to save that salvo for the next set of restrictions.

There is no sign of that happening any time soon. Remember Chinese gov reduced import tariff to zero on semiconductor equipments,and setup a fast customs clearance channel for semiconductor companies to import equipments. That is the sign of facilitating import foreign equipment,not restricting it.

well, we will find out. Chinese govt can be really accommodating now to make it easier for equipment to come in that they still can't produce in sufficient numbers domestically and then remove that later when domestic capacity is no longer an issue. It can certainly escalate the tech war if pushed to do so.

7nm process is for digital logic circuits, probably they are referring to spice simulation tools.
I guess full digital support would be from HDL simulation to synthesis to foorplanning to placement to clock-timing - layout - to mask.

That's some complex electrical engineering kinds of stuff. They will probably require quite a number of circuit design engineers specializing in semiconductor devices with a bit of programming knowledge on the side. Hiring just a bunch of software engineers with little knowledge of circuit design definitely won't do. So it should be a mix of both.

What are analog chips then? and why do they need 7nm process ?
Analog chips don't use digital signals only, they send and process analog signals with continuous voltage levels. One application of 7 nm analog would be super fast ADCs for high speed RF or optoelectronics.

You don't need them for 5G though to get the most out of 5G they're useful. 65 nm is enough.

It seems that AMAT recently got clearance from the US gov for their equipment export to China

They don't need to if the performance is sufficient for application. They can offer same product at new nodes, but whether there will be buyers depends on cost effectiveness.

Of course you need people with people with knowledge of not just coding but also high level knowledge of electric engineering and advanced mathematics.
But what really solidify an EDA company is their collaboration with fabs and mayor IC design houses.
