Cross-border trains to North Korea are reopening for the first time post-covid.

BEIJING -- China said Tuesday it will be resuming passenger trains to North Korea after service was halted during COVID. Trains will run between Beijing and Pyongyang, four times a week starting Thursday. Daily train service will also resume at the border town of Dandong in China to Pyongyang, China's railways authority announced. The resumption of the service will “further promote people-to-people exchanges, economic and trade cooperation and cultural exchanges between China and North Korea,” the announcement said.

Cargo throughput to Europe is up sharply to start 2026.

The number of China-Europe freight train trips rose 31.7% year-on-year to 3,501 in the first two months of 2026, reversing a period of sluggish growth. The strong rebound highlights how geopolitical disruptions to global shipping and a recovery in China-Russia trade are redirecting international freight to overland rail routes.

From January to February, the network carried 352,100 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo, up 25.2%, according to China State Railway Group Co. Ltd. The surge contrasts with full-year 2025, when total trips increased just 3.2% to about 20,000 and overall cargo volume fell 1.3% to roughly 2.1 million TEUs. Outbound trips dropped 6.1% to 9,898 last year, while inbound journeys rose 14.4% to about 10,100.

In the photos posted below staff members operate a new energy flash butt welder for multiple scenarios at the construction site of the Hangzhou-Deqing Suburban Railway, in east China's Zhejiang Province, March 22, 2026. At the construction site of the Hangzhou-Deqing Suburban Railway, a new energy flash butt welder for multiple scenarios was used for the first time to perform welding operations on steel rails on Sunday.

The device adopts a hybrid power mode, equipped with an intelligent energy management system, and supports a "charging while welding" mode. It can independently complete the welding of 50 rail joints once fully charged, ensuring continuous and stable construction in areas without external power sources.

The railway, connecting Yuhang District of Hangzhou City with Deqing County of Huzhou City with nine stations along the line, will further enhance the rail transit network of Hangzhou upon completion. (ALL photos by Xinhua/Huang Zongzhi)
